service history

IV noticed a lot of members on about service history and genuine mileage on bikes, do you really beleive that Iv known  cars clocked every year in the first three years and i know it also happens to bikes, I get around a few auctions and you hear all the dodgy dealings there, remember dealers are there for profit only not to give you a fair deal, you can buy service history and log books on e-bay ( so iv been told ) how can you really tell  what history a bike as in the end its down to your own judgment and what the bike really looks like, BY  the way I dont deal in bikes or cars but do have a lot to do with the garage trade Happy new year to you all

People still get

hung up about mileage, but its far less of a factor than it used to be - modern motors can rack up far higher mileages than the older ones did providing they're looked after. In fact, its how those miles have been clocked which is probably more important (ie how its been treated generally, has it been thrashed? Has it done a lot of short runs and never been properly warmed up? etc), and the overall condition tends to paint a picture of how its been treated too.

I tend to use one particular dealer whom I know is good (previous experience and word of mouth recommendation), has been trading for years and based two streets away from my home.

Indeed, the old Jaguar XJ40 had electronic odometer and was said to be "unclockable" - yet one mechanic about 15 years ago (for demonstration purposes) managed to clock a 95,000 mile car down to 28,000 in five minutes flat, using nothing more than a £100 Psion personal organiser of all things (and yes, he put it back to 95k straight after!).

Mileage

It has always been a minefield. A local car dealer in Leeds and his family have just been in court for clocking huge mileages from vehicles.

Clocking

Same with bikes. When I was looking for an RSV, I looked at quite a few where the mileages didn't tally with the overall condition, eg, one advertised with only 900 miles and 18 months old had different tyres than standard, rust on various fittings and some screws chewed up, the chain was very worn and the bike to me looked as if it had done at least 15k.

Unfortunately you only learn through experience, and why clocking vehicles is such a widespread and lucrative business.
