Stolen vehicle squad saved

One of the country’s last remaining police stolen vehicle squads has been saved from closure. The Met’s stolen vehicle unit, which has worked to jail organised bike thieves with undercover stings and long-running investigations, had been earmarked for closure in police budget cuts. But the unit is now to remain open, sources have confirmed. Met bosses have told the squad it...

Excellent news.

That said they seem to be setup to recover stolen vehicles and arrest gangs. Good news but it doesn't stop your pride and joy from being stolen in the first place. Wouldn't it be nice if the public had a sense of community spirit and were (what's the horrible word I'm about to use - oh yes incentivised)  to get involved and report criminal activities. It's about time the Great British public got off their fat, lazy arses got involved and actually did something to help, like being observant and reporting crimes to the Police instead of standing back like a bunch of spineless wimps.

What about Demand?

Remember, that if people were not buying stolen bikes and parts all the time, the thieves would naturally go out of business. The police need to crack down on crooked shops that trade in stolen goods.

True, Piglet2010 -

... but bear in mind a load of these bikes will be shipped straight out of here and sold to criminal scum abroad.  No left-right hand drive conversion on bikes.  Didn't we read just recently about that bloke who only just saved his own bike from a regular export assignment?

A crappy old 125 makes you look like a king on a lot of the subcontinents.  God knows how much a pretty new superbike would fetch.

No

A triumph for common sense would include bringing back the specialist units which markedly reduce crime in specific problem areas. Unfortunately they deliver a service from behind the scenes mostly which means joe moron out there doesn't get the Victorian style "copper on every street marching round the block and getting lashes if he turns up at the start-finish line a minute late". If you told the Army to get rid of its specialist units and support units and just turn everyone into infantry what do you think would happen? Yeh we'd have loads more men on the ground which looks great for figures but really - do you want the man up front with the bomb dog having no idea if he's found a roadside bomb or wants to wee on a really interesting smell? Let's go one step further and merge the Army, Navy and Brill Cream Boys together. Sounds good to me! Do you really want every doctor who sees you to be generic? No, you see a specialist and you want that specialist to work with other specialists. You need the GPs to bring it all together but turning every doctor into a GP would be madness to the extreme. Ignoring specialists at hospitals and seeing patients using "interested" general practitioners in giant GP practices would also be madness.... oh.... f**k, they're doing that already...

Still Demand

@ SlowLearner – Well, since the EU likes to throw its weight around, what about sanctioning countries that allow stolen vehicles (and other goods) to be easily trafficked?

On another point, repair shops that deal in stolen parts are also usually also defrauding insurance companies and/or customers by representing the parts as new or legitimate salvage.

This article is about ONE squad, which deals with thefts within the Met policing area. Not all bikes are stolen from that area; there are many organised gangs around the UK , which remains a worry, given the reduction in police numbers, budget cuts etc. In times of recession, people want to save money; will they necessarily ask WHY a part is cheap when they get a bill? Or will they think "result" and turn a blind eye......

This is but one area of policing that will suffer. We'll all get to experience the others, I'm sure. As for the scumbags that steal bikes - let's hope that their next shit is an angry hedgehog with syphillis!

It makes me so made that this country gives billions of pounds to other countries, keeps on taking in hundreds of thousands of immigrants, refuses to make certain huge companies pay their tax bill (Vodafone owe £6 billion, the same amount as the cuts made last year), and yet we pick on the disabled, taking their money away from them and also much needed care packages, get rid of half the police force when we need more, ruin doctors surgeries ETC! I could go on all week!

We are so close to being a third world country and we are already the laughing stock to most of the planet, what exactly did happen to the GREAT in great britain?

Good news prevails

If I was in the position to do so; I would personally fund to expand this squad to all mayor cities. It makes my blood boil just to think that same a** is going to get their dirty hands on my pride and joy.
