How thousands of motorcyclists could be unwittingly uninsured

Thousands of motorcyclists could be unwittingly riding without insurance because of confusion over what constitutes a full licence. Many riders tell their insurance company they have had a full licence since the date they passed their standard motorcycle test. But the insurance ombudsman has concluded they are wrong, and a full licence is only obtained when the 33bhp power restriction elapses,...

Pay good money for worthless paper

Insurance companies finding yet another way to weasel out of paying claims. Why do we have to deal with these crooks?

MCN gets it wrong ...

... if you make such a mistake on your proposal you are still insured and your insurer cannot refuse to deal with a claim, but before dealing with a claim, they have the right to charge an additional premium before they do. This is what the insurer offered in this case and it was refused.

Wait till next year

If this is confusing people now, what's it going to be like from January 2013 when licences change to THREE different categories?

It could render a policy invalid, as in the case of Mr Osborn. An insurer is not compelled to pay a claim against an invalid policy. We haven't got it wrong. Mr Osborn had not made a claim.

So for the two year restriction am I supposed to not get insured or technically put a provisional and then not get insured because my license is not a provisional, pink license means full license, why not create another colour if it is a seperate insurance bracket, try and pull this stunt with me and they will be getting a shit in the post

Steve - talk to a lawyer. An insurer can cancel a policy anytime they like, just as an insured can. It does NOT mean "thousands are uninsured" because while the policy is in force, indemnity is valid. Please be responsible with your reporting.

I frequently speak to lawyers and have discussed this issue with the ombudsman. You are wrong. Insurers can and do reject claims over accessories they have not been informed of. They can certainly do it if they believe the insured has misinformed them about how many years he's had a licence. Try it. Get a licence for a new category of vehicle, tell an insurer you've had that licence 20 years and then make a claim. Actually, don't. They won't pay it. The obmudsman settles disputes over claims. It follows that potentially thousands of riders are affected by its decision.

cant see the fuse, its really simple.

If you have a full motorcycle licence you can ride any bike.

If there are restrictions then its not full, is it.

daylight robbery

tractorboybig ----- the point is, what is a restricted licence? there's no middle ground in insurance options, its full or provisional..... the 33bhp licence IS a full restricted licence.....what is happening is the insurance companies have found a loop hole whereby they can now demand you state your licence has been held for 2 years less, which for younger riders like myself, will massively effect the premiums

the insurance companies stiff the younger riders enough, without having this added!

It will get worse.

All this arises because the licensing system is overcomplicated and designed, rather than to produce competent motorcyclists, to put people off getting the licence in the first place.

It's a complete and utter shambles and if you think that's bad wait until the new regime comes in 2013.
