First Track Day

Thinking of doing my first track day later this year, May/June if I'm not heading to the IOM.

I ride a SV650s, 2Pc zip Leathers & the rest. & will be heading for the Novice group. If I don't go to the IOM, I will hopfully be doing 2 or 3 track days this year.

As a Track Day 'Noob' what should I look out for, basicly what should I be doing the night before & track day to make sure I have the best day/ learning experiance possible.

I've been looking into these Level 1 riding courses, £309 @ Oulton Park & includes track usage.

My SV is my only transport I don't have means of getting it to & from the track other than riding it, I have break down cover so could I ask them to come & drop it off back to my door if I were to crash? <Touch wood I don't come off.

Also noticed you can hire bikes at the track, I've noticed there R6's comming from an SV to the track, & have only ever test rode an R6 is it worth jumping on it? & also does anyone know the costs to borrow one for the day?

Thanks in advance

First Timer

Don't worry about a thing.First if you have to ride to the circuit then pick one as near as possible, bearing in mind that you will have to sign on about 7.30-8.30.This is where they check your driving licence, fill in the indemnity forms and get your bracelet or sticker etc.A safety briefing then takes place where then you get another sticker or whatever to confirm you have attended...don't attend and they will not let you on the track. The night or ideally day before check over your bike ,chain tension, tyres, etc etc etc...make sure everything is sound .You will be surprised how track riding eats tyres and brake pads.Mirrors can be folded back on the day and it's up to you wether you want to tape up your lights with some duct tape etc,Arrive with a full tank cos petrol in the circuit is ott price wise, you can then nip out at lunch for a refill.

Go for the novice group and just relax, use your head it's not a race.I've always told friends to try and ride the track initially using as little brakes as possible, use your engine to slow down and get the flow.Fast track riding is not about thrashing up to the bends then hammering the brakes it's about being smooth and flowing.Don't worry who's behind you thats there problem getting past. All track day events have instructors there who will help with lines etc.Use them, most are quick capable lads so look and listen.

Drink plenty of water and don't pig out with food.It slows you down.Little and often,I usually take snack bars or fruit .

Bike hire I've found is about £250 for the day and a hefty deposit in case the worse happens.

Oh and they are addictive.......enjoy

Hi, firstly your first reply is spot on. Dont bother with hire bike as it will be nothing like your bike.As your riding a twin you'll never be in the wrong gear. So will have a little less to think about, just getting your lines right is tough enough. You will learn so much more riding your own bike, and confidence will just grow and grow. Relax and enjoy. skippy
