IAM's 'unfair' claims over bike safety

The Institute of Advanced Motorists has been accused of unfairly focussing on motorcyclists with claims of rising casualties. An IAM release states that 18 motorcyclists were killed or seriously injured a day from July to September 2011, up 2% on the year before. The release says motorcycle casualties remained 'stagnant' compared to figures for cars and calls on police and government...

Stats

As one politician once said there are lies, damn lies and statistics. How many of the casualties are caused by car drivers not looking the old “Sorry mate I didn’t see you” I had an incident with a car a few weeks ago who watch switching lanes down a dual carriageway cut me up about 6 feet from his back bumper, when I said why don’t you use your mirrors and I got a load of abuse, thus his mirror went hurtling down the road courtesy of my foot, I said next time I see you do that it will be your head. I think every car driver must be compelled to ride a bike before they get their hands on car

I took a ridesafe course last year, one of the best bits of advise I received was, "no matter who's in the right and who's in the wrong when your on a motorbike its you who will come off worse when you have an accident"! I haven't been riding long but have taken the attitude that every other person on the road is a d*^k and to expect anything at any time and don't assume someone is going to do the obvious or indicated. I don't claim to be the best rider or even a good one but so far so good.
