Rossi's best ability was being able to tell the team what was happening with the bike, and JB was a master at solving problems for his riders.  Factories mostly pay lip-service to a rider's wants, and restrict their input to the process to choosing one of the options placed before them.  Rossi himself commented last year - "I just ride it".

Of course there is some trickle down effect, and if a team can't solve the rider's problems (like Ducati last year) they put pressure on the factory to make a major change (like Ducati last year).

Much rubbish is spoken about this myth of development riders.  Test riders are more closely linked with development.
