Video: Triumph Explorer 1200 first ride

Triumph is making no bones about gunning for BMW's best-selling R1200GS - its new Explorer 1200 is aimed squarely at giving the BMW a bloody nose. Triumph motorcycles for sale. And in every possible way, except for off-road ability and image, the Triumph is dynamically the better bike, and in some cases by a long way. Triumph has built a bike...

I'm not sure the GS will ever be knocked off top spot because the bike in so many respects is unique.

If it was just about on road handling the multi strada would have pushed it from it's perch.  If it was just about off roading the KTM would have toppled it years ago.

There is something about the riding position, the size (especially the seat to foot rest distance), the suspension, the low centre of gravity, the gentle rocking when you blip the throttle at the lights, the comfort etc that makes the GS what it is.  It may not do anything brilliantly, but I love the bike as a package.

So many bikes are rendered useless when you are 6'4" with stupidly long legs.  I've owned the 1000 V-Strom which had a fantastic engine and was much smoother than the GS, but the riding position gave me all sorts of problems after a few hours and the fuel economy was crap.

The only bike for me that comes close to the GS is my RD04 Africa Twin even with a 21" front wheel

triumph explorer

looking forward to the ride of the new explorer just to see how it compares to the gs, had the 1150gs 70000 miles loved it struggled to come to terms with the 1200. Looks good but a bit too gsish ?

Explorer

Had a test ride last Friday and enjoyed it so much came back and did a deal for one in black. Doesn't feel as big as it looks, handles really well and the engine is all torque. It is my first adventure style bike after sports and sports/tourers, presently ride a Sprint 1050, looking forward to picking it up later in April.

Good vid

but can someone explain why the rider is attacking right hand bends while way over the right, and left handers by being way over to the left? Looks like he's putting himself in the hedge or in danger of hitting badly positioned oncoming traffic and can't see much around the bend. I may be wrong, but that's what it looks like to me. Just wondering.
