I've done that trip a few times If you try and do too much off the main roads it becomes a real slow trip it can double the time. Its 400 odd miles anyway I would just try and avoide the built up area of Essen etc by staying north and heading for Nijmegen, Arnhem, Apeldoorn (cool historic military places) then across to Osnabruck and on I recon that a good 8 hr day with stops
