Riding through France

 In August this year I am catching the ferry from Portsmouth to Caen in France, then South to the Pyrenees. At the age of 48 it is my first time riding abroad & would value any advice no matter how little, on anything regarding the transporting of my bike on the ferry, to what are the essentials I need. Basically..... HELP! :smile

Straps or rope will be provided on the ferry. Put the bike in gear on the side stand and tie something around the front brake lever to keep it on. Also - make sure that the rope/strap goes over the seat tightly enough to compress the suspension.

You can buy a harness that fits over the handlebars from most bike shops which helps to secure the bike with the straps on the ship.
It's unlikely you'll be the only biker on the ferry and, in my experience, others are very happy to help. I'm sure you will be fine.

Don't use the 95+E10 fuel !

I toured France last year and it was great. There are some really good bike friendly ' Chambre D'hotes ' ( B&Bs ) with secure parking, if you don't fancy camping ( lots on internet ).  My main advice is don't use the 95+E10 fuel  ( it's Bio fuel ), use the 95 or 98 octane sans plomb ( unleaded ).
