Jerez MotoGP: Stoner takes first win of 2012

Reigning MotoGP champion Casey Stoner has taken his first race win of 2012 at Jerez today despite suffering from arm pump in the latter stages of the race. The start of the race saw some of the best racing seen in the premier class for a long time, with the first six riders all switching places as they battled for the...

Tyres. Listening to some of the riders you would think they didn't know what tyres they were starting on. You've got Hayden saying he knew the bike was hard on the tyres and then saying his tyres went off because they were too soft. You chose the tyres, Nicky you should have known this would happen. Then you've got Pedrosa complaining that he couldn't shake Cal because Cal's hard front tyre meant he could brake later than Pedrosa in the late stages of the race. Dani, nobody made you choose a Harder tyre than Cal. Anyway who's to say that if Pedrosa had chosen the same hard tyre as Cal he would even have been ahead of Cal at that stage. At least Lorenzo made a clear admission that he had chosen the wrong tyre. Tyre choice is as much part of the race as the way you ride or the way you set the bike up. If a tyre falls apart after 15 laps when other riders on the same tyre go the distance then fair enough, complain. But FFS stop pretending it wasn't you that chose the tyres.

Noshow

Why have Australians got such a big chip on their shoulder? And incidentally why is it that the worst ones have always lived longer in the UK than their "home" country and were descended from 10 quid tourists in the first place?

Jolly...

Not sure anyone chose the "wrong" tyre... they chose a tyre they thought suited the conditions... Cal gambled with a harder set-up which proved to be better, but had they had a few spots of rain, as it had been all morning, he could have dropped back drastically & you'd be saying he chose wrong. It was a gamble by all made easier by the fact they were mostly running the same... in those terms it was the correct tyre choice... they all made it to the end of the race &, with the possible exception of Nicky, all made it to the end without loosing a place because of tyre degradation.

Exactly Hedgy.

Jeeez, after 35 years of watching the sport I thought you would've noticed the fickle nature of the conditions Jolly and realised the gamble tyre choice was either way. The soft front was the safe option. Cal said pre race he would gamble should conditions look iffy, and he did. It paid off, almost handsomely.

Just a very naughty boy!

You're full of shit Hugespleen! Just cause your new best buddy David lets you post your mindless ramblings on his Flossi appreciation site, now he's the mesiah! Hahahaha haha hahahaha haha... Personally, I don't think he'd know the flux capacitor from the fkn hydroscolator, but I do get a laugh how you dutifully carry out the bean sucking number either at the start of finish of your posts there to guarantee they don't get deleted! Hahahaha, like I said, It's just the Christian version of CRASH.net, with all the seedy undertones of priests and the like to boot!

Anyway, all we've seen this weekend is the result of a swift size 10 Phil Morris boot fair in the arse for Flo's disrespectful comments towards an employer that has thrown a winning motorcyle in the skip when all he thinks he needs to do now is dial up Hicky's settings and voila! I've never seen a bigger back down in the history of the sport! Qualify 13th, finish 9th? How the fkn hell can you take this clown seriously when he comes out with the shit he has after the race? I'll bet he's fkn fuming! Hahahaha...

But then, as the teams no.2 rider, maybe he should just bury that tail a bit further between his legs and do as he's told! Meeeoooowwwww...

Much more recently than Biaggi and Gibernau. Throughout the 800 era in fact.

throughout the 800 era?

excluding 2011 i take it.

A characteristic of the 800 era was a narrow range of available racing lines - stray off them and you lost time no matter who you were. The only time I recall seeing riders take looks up the inside is when they were being held up and knew they could recover. None of the top 4 ever had that luxury and i remember far more races like Phillip Island 2009 where they were on the absolute limit keeping up with each other. And besides, Rossi's fabled "mind games" deserted him long ago.

Unless you can name some races where what you described actually happened that is.

Mr Rossi's Sea-change

Nice link Bloodbubble

Pretty sure there has been some serious talking with Mr Rossi behinds the scenes and a realisation that perhaps the Italian supporters care more for Ducati than Mr Rossi. Or have the Audi/VW management had something to say about success above personality.

It must have been hard for Mr Rossi to give that interview and the responses to the questions (which I assume were submitted beforehand) were interesting & enlightening perhaps indicating a change in Mr Rossi's mindset:

"Nicky has been working in this direction since the tests" (note that it was Nicky & not Mr Rossi - the first humility shown by Mr Rossi!!) - "sometimes it's hard when I can't ride the bike as I like" (perhaps paraphrased as : "I thought I was God but I am not"???) - "This bike... ...I tried too hard to overhaul it" and "The results were good I started the race blind, using a new setup that's more 'Ducati Style'" (another way of saying "I need to ride it as a Ducati without preconceptions").

Though there is a way to go as he still asserts "You can't really improvise in the corners" ignoring the fact that that was the very thing that made Stoner supreme in riding the Ducati in comparison with Hayden et. al. in the past. Perhaps he should reflect that no one has succeeded with the Ducati by trying to ride it using the skills they have learned from 125/250 and the Japanese GP bikes.

The beauty and excitement of the Ducati is that it is unique, it is not a Honda or Yamaha. That is why people buy it and that is why it makes for exciting GP racing. Come on Mr Rossi, you have a special inate skill that transcends the also-rans and makes you special. All that is in the way of success is yourself.

It suprises me that people are amazed at Cal's performance these last two races. The pre-season testing showed him right up at the top. Obviously either the new capacity suits him or it is the natural progression after a year learning the skills of MotoGP. I would hope that it is the latter because if it is not he will soon just become an "Sometimes Alien" like Pedrosa.

The sadness is Ben Spies who should be there but is not. Against that only time will tell.

For me there are, at the moment, only two for the Championship (Lorenzo & Stoner) as it was last year but for Lorenzo's Finger. What I am looking forward to is the interlopers or those who aspire to Alien status, such as Cal, Spies, Dovizioso, Bautista and Bradl, who will make sure that Lorenzo & Stoner cannot rely on success. It would be nicer still if Mr Rossi was there as well so that he can retire next year with grace, success and fond memories instead of this year with the bitterness of failure.

time to step up

I am a great rossi fan but he seems to be happy running around in mid division and not pushing the bike to its limits. If he cant deliver the goods anymore he should admit it and retire before his contract isn't renewed.

DOES THAT GRASS LOOK GREENER ?

I was thinking maybe I shouldn`t take the piss out of the yellow`s anymore,it`s not "big or clever",but then I thought                                  that gap was me thinking.  What would have happened when Stoner went to Honda,{ a bike that had never been close to winning a World Title in 800 guise },from a World Championship winning team at Ducati, and after riding it at Valencia finished dead last !    What would the yellow`s have said ?   Would they have said  Give him time to sort it out properly,he will soon be winning on it ?    Or would they have said something slightly less polite ?   Umm, now let`s switch that around a bit, VR find`s himself with nowhere left to go,{ his fault },and he find`s the Ducati to be seriously     lacking in most area`s   the yellow`s come out in force and tell the WORLD it`s all Stoner`s fault,he couldn`t set up a bleeding Lego wall. You just wait and see what happen`s when the Doctor and his team of surgeon`s get to work !      Well some little time later,{ are you taking the piss } ?  It don`t feckin work !!!!!   Guess who`s fault it is? No it`s not Stoner`s   It`s bloody Ducati`s effin fault  WOW ,who would of thunk it ?   Double Standard`s or What ?
