Casey Stoner announces retirement

Repsol Honda rider Casey Stoner has announced that he will retire at the end of the 2012 season. The shock announcement was delivered to a packed press conference at Le Mans ahead of this weekend’s MotoGP round. The 26-year-old who was crowned World Champion in 2008 and 2011 currently leads the 2012 standings by one point from Jorge Lorenzo. Stoner cited numerous reasons...

Such a shame...

... but he was never listened to at Ducati & now he's on a Honda that handles like a horse but as long as he's winning races it appears they're not bothered... he gets boo'ed when he wins & slated when he doesn't... he's racing the same 2 guys every week & the series is going downhill rapidly... can't see why he wants to leave really.

Rumour is Ducati is offering him a wildcard ride at Qatar 2013 to prove it's not the bike... rumour also is Stoner's gonna ditch it if he's leading on the last lap just to prove it always was.

must be rubbing his hands in glee. Sudden hot favourite for the 2013 title and a massive pay hike from Yamaha to keep him away from Honda. It's like all his Christmases at once.

I am gutted, really Casey? Not a fan, but putting together a qualy lap! I honestly don't think there has ever been a better rider. I live in Holland, and normally i don't go to Assen for the races( more of a WSBK fan and BSB). This year i will go on the thursday, free practice, no crowds. I will go to as many bends as possible to see Casey work that RCV like no one can!

if he's lost his mojo, then retirement is absolutely the correct decision.  better to go out at the very top of the sport - he now has a massive incentive for the rest of this season to try to retire as as a back-to-back MotoGP World Champion.  at such a young age, he can have a second career - i'd wager he'll have a go in the Aussie V8s, but he's got plenty of time to sit back and plan for the future.

good luck with whatever you choose to do Casey - a true champion.

My flippant prediction...

about Casey has come true (but a round earlier). What next? Will Dani actually become heavy weight champion of the world haha (I think I should play the Lottery for the first time in my life this weekend too) The end of the season contract renewal episode is going to be bloody interesting now! However, I'm not going to speculate as it is pointless as the possibilities are more or less endless.
