Jawa I love your picture because

it could almost be a photo of a bike shop we had here in Leicester back in the 60's. Place was called Grays, anyone recal them? Mucky fusty old place it was with tatty lino on the floor that was covered in oil staines and there was always a wonderful stink of exhaust fumes and petrol. Was the sort of place we used to go to spend a wet Saturday afternoon just browsing round looking at all the poor rusty and undesirable bikes they had but if we looked closer we could sometines find a real nice one. Back then there were plenty of bike shops like that, some not so big as Grays but the same basic layout of oil soaked floor, dirty walls and water stained ceilings. You could pick up a ratty old Honda 250 or 350 twin for maybe £90 and if you could get finance you could ride off with a nearly new Bonnie or BSA Lightning for £300, I know, I did. :winkie: but these days I cant stand the new modern bike shops with the sales peeps all decked out in their corporate logo enblazoned shirts and smart trousers. I just dont feel comfortable in those new places, perhaps being an old fart I no longer fit in. :upset: And they often have carpet on the floor ffs........ not natural at all.

thanks man,

i hear where your coming from.

as a kid i worked in a bike shop, i started by sweeping up and making brews.

The other kids thought it was so cool i had my own job and my own bikes!

The place was.... self sufficient. it had been open since the 60s, and was basically a delapadated terraced house which had metamorphosized into a bike shop

full of crap really, but the smell of the place... the expertise of the guys working there...

i can always tell a bike garage over a car place as soon as i get a whiff!

its a much sweeter smell.

i worked there on saturdays for years....such a great shop.

gone now RIP Regents!

and carpet?? No carpet there, just 6 inch thick oil and dirt!!

The upstairs bathroom had used tyres in the bath, and the toilet was always blocked

its a tattoo shop now, and has been gutted and renovated

IF YOU LIKE PROPER BIKE SHOPS...

GET UP TO PADGETTS ( PADGETTS OF BATLEY )   it really is worth a trip.

Not quite dust and oil stains.  BUT if you've got the money, you could buy a brand new, still in its box....well, almost owt, ..early R1, R6,  you name it, you'll find it:   ...the place is a proper treat.
