Riders applaud bold decision to cancel Senior TT

John McGuinness and his rivals were ruing the loss of the Senior TT, which succumbed to bad weather for the first time since the event started back in 1907. After a race week hammered by difficult weather conditions this was the most difficult decision rookie TT Clerk of the Course Gary Thompson MBE BEM had to make, but one that was...

Does this now means that whenever there is damp/rain patches etc.....they are going to cancel race? Wondered how long it would be until this started to happen at the iomTT

Not Sure about This

Whilst safety is of prime importance, everybody understands that weather on the IOM is highly changeable and there is always a strong chance of rain. Look at the 1990 Senior; it was raining in places and dry in others. They all still rode with Fogarty winning.

1987 Senior that Joey won; it was absolutely throwing down. Do the statistics tell us that if it is raining on the TT course there are more serious accidents. Surely this is how it should be judged.

Obviously rider safety is at the forefront, they had the chance to hold the Senior earlier in the week, if they are going to cancel it when it's wet, as stated by RobTZ loads of TT weeks have been wet, the riders know it's wet, if it's going to be dry only racing at the TT, people are not going to fork out cash for an expensive week, with no racing.

RobTZ...

You’re right, Joey did indeed win the 1987 senior in atrocious conditions, and if I remember rightly his comment afterwards was "...it never should have been run, it was desperate."

And..

I believe all riders made it back off the island, is this correct? If so the first TT without fatalities for how long? Great news!

Shame about the missed Senior, but probably for the best

It's ashame for all, riders and specs, but if someone hadn't taken that decision and riders were hurt, there would have been an outcry. Mainly I feel very sorry for the Norton team. Maybe they can run in a few BSB races to prep it in readiness for next year.

The Fans

They will have paid serious money to go and watch the races plus the cost of Hotels / Boarding Houses.

What about the people that stuck it out camping in the rain for days waiting to see the main race of the week.

precedent set

if it's going to rain at the TT, prepare yourself for no Senior TT if it's going to stay as the last race.  if there's a properly foul week of weather, there will be no racing at all.  something for the organisers to mull over during the next 11 months ....

cancelled senior

we came across for the senior (on a day trip) only to be left bitterly disapointed. organisers and riders made the complete correct decision, its the way it goes, no superbikes on the island on damp roads, fair enough, i would rather see no racing than hear of tragedy through un-necessary risks. having gone for race week for the last 20 years and just having a couple of day trips this year i have remembered that you need to go for at least a couple of overnights, so next year we're off for race week. Roll on next year and see you all on the island.

What you say is correct.

However it will make me think about going to the island.
