Poll: What's your opinion of hi-vis?

From January next year all French motorcyclists will have to wear a certain amount of hi-vis over their jacket. Good thing? What's your opinion of hi-vis? pollcomment

Freedom of choice

I wear it sometimes, sometimes not. My choice. True, if the numb nuts in the box doesn't look in the first place, then no matter what you wear you have a situation on your hands. However, if it doesn't work, then why do we see the plod or any other service personnel? Plus, we will never correctly know the drivers that have seen us because of it, only the bad ones who don't. Observation, reaction and all that SPIKER40 has said.

Considering there's 1 million bikes on the British roads, not all at once, in fact, very few at one time, and 30 million cars, seemingly all at the same time, even if we all stated looking like dayglo freaks there would still be a huge gap between spotting each other. So your comment makes no sense.

I do have a hi-vis jacket (one of these £1 ones) but only wear it when its foggy or when weathers crap and visibility is poor. I know it makes next to nothing difference but if some dickhead doesn't see me, then at least it will help with insurance :)

Plus the fact that Hi-vis is so common these days, most people don't even notice it, it just blends in

Hi-vis lo-vis

I've experimented running with or without headlamps, reflective stickers and fluorescent strips and it doesn't make a blind bit of difference!! Car-drivers will only notice you if they have the mind-set to.

DfT issued figures last year that stated 67% of bike accidents were caused by cars pulling out of side roads or turning right into a motorcyclists path, the victim shouldn't be punished for the perpetrators wrong-doing therefore it should be up to the rider to decide whether to wear hi-vis and should not be imposed by E.U. law!

Anyhow if you ride regularly hi-vis soon becomes lo-vis as it gets so dirty from road filth.

No matter what you wear the dozey bugger who is half asleep with a brew in one hand and a bacon butty in the other aint going to see anyone.

One thing i did notice is i owned a white speed triple with blue tinted headlights and a white helmet

The amount of muppets who sudenly noticed me while just about to pull out was remarkable. And the amout of drivers who suddenly slowed down and used their indicaters Oh and started to drive with good skills was amazing.

Hi viz does not work

So...

The Vast Majority of US share a similar opinion regarding Hi Viz. MCN should print all the replies next week and send to the powers that be... not that it would make any difference at all. 30 million car drivers must contribute way more tax than the 1 million or so Bikers... and at the rate of decline in new bikers due to the completely one sided approach to training and testing imposed by successive Governments......(sorry i'm on my soap box again).

Its the helmet that counts

All Hi Viz lower than your neck is completely useless. I have experimented with it all and now ride my bikes with very good lights (HID Xenons if necessary depending on the bike) and secondly a hi viz helmet. All the rest is black leather. Riding without the very visible helmet results in me being less visible, I am 100% sure of it. Riding with a lovely painted Arai is positively dangerous in comparison. It's a pity but it's my experience that I've never ever had an off or even a near miss wearing the Hi Viz helmet. And thats someone who rides all over UK, Europe including in and out of London doing over 15k miles a year in all weathers. The French law is stupid, should be up to each rider to live and die how they wish. If they want to ride with little visibility that's their problem.

France is the idiot country that restricts BHP to 106

One other point.  Let's not forget this new law comes from France.   Proud nation that has ruined performance biking, restricting all bikes to a max of 106BHP.  (I wouldn't want to ride my S1000RR after being mutilated by the French bureaucrats.)  They've even banned SatNavs showing locations of speed cameras.  They're convinced their dreadful road death record is caused by foreigners using their roads like race tracks and powerful bikes.  Real cause being their drink driving tradition.  Only country I've seen with truck drivers drinking wine at lunchtime with the cops sitting at the next table.  After HiViz they'll be making airbag suits obligatory next!  Message to Frenchies - Stop Drinking You Boozy Grenouilles!

Works

Seems to work for me, but there are still people out there where it doesn't help because they simply don't look. I know it helps me spot cyclists further off if they have hivi on. When the sun is in the right place and lights me up it proves that the majority of car drivers aren't c**ts because when I'm filtering down the dual carriageway it's like parting of the red sea. It also proves some are utter sperm burpers as they move to close off your gap. This is not just careless driving, it's dangerous.
