OK, so deaths are down 10% but serious injuries up by 10%m that just sounds like we have got better at keeping them alive than better at riding hmmmm

Pretty much the only bikers left are experienced Battle hardened 40 somethings, who have become well used to avoiding the masses of crap Car Drivers.?????? Or is it because the young Scooter riders are being discouraged from growing up into Bikers due to Draconian measures introduced by Ministers, thus only being exposed to the appalling driving for about one year until they buy a Saxo ?????????

I'll put a days wage on it, that when this country drags it arse out of the gloom, and people feel secure again, the bikes will be back and the deaths will creep up, its sad, but its my perspective on it... Ride safe boys.

Sportsbike sales are in the toilet and a lot of Sunday fun rides will have been rained off.  So, more kids getting smashed up at 30mph junctions, fewer geezers on crisismobiles riding into trees at triple digit speeds.   Seems about right.

When we are going to be told motorcycle casualty figures, it would be interesting to hear what percentage was the motorcyclists fault! That would be very relevant! Then we would know if it was the motorcyclists or the box drivers who are becoming safer!

"Total" motorcycle casualties, for all we know, could include things like motocross / off-road riding which is of little relevance to road accident statistics.

Nor do we know the circumstances of these accidents (single vehicle accident / collision / road / weather conditions etc), so the figures in themselves are pretty meaningless. The problem with stats is they can be twisted to suit the agenda of a particular group, ie "deaths from all road accidents up 3%, the first increase since 2003" being turned into "speed cameras have been turned off, road deaths have gone up and we told you it would happen, so we better get them cameras back on sharpish".

And lets not forget that a road death (regardless of fault) is a family without a parent / sibling / son / daughter etc., and not just a number on a sheet of paper in a beaureaucrats office.

Could it be that more people are commuting by bike to save cash but not doing so much leisure riding meaning less high speed weekend stuff and more in town lower speed collisions resulting in fewer deaths but more serious and slight injuries.

Only injuries that occur on the road should go in the stats - off road in the park injuries aren't included, neither are track day injuries... and if you're looking at who's at fault - overall about 1/3rd of crashes are single vehicle (so the rider's fault) and of the rest it's about 50:50 so over all 2/3rds of rider crashes are the fault of the rider. What would be interesting to see is what proportion of which severity of casualty is the fault of rider or driver.

Just a thought... as more bikes now have ABS I truly believe that this is a factor which helped reduce accidents. I am aware many riders do not like ABS on bikes, however, I have never come off a bike that had ABS installed. A bike with ABS is so much more controllable in emergency situations whether on dry or wet tarmac. It also stops at shorter distances.

From my experience I encourage everyone to have ABS on their bikes. Surely not everybody agrees.
