Assen MotoGP: Casey Stoner pounces for vital victory

Casey Stoner hauled himself right back into contention to retire from MotoGP at the end of 2012 as world champion after he triumphed in a controversial Dutch TT at Assen yesterday. With Jorge Lorenzo taken out of the race by Alvaro Bautista’s awful braking mistake at the first corner, Stoner romped to his third win of the season to move level...

A game of diminishing energy

Stoner displayed the true grit of the champion he is yesterday. Capitalising on Lorenzo's rotten luck. Pedrosa was the big disappointment for me. Fit and quietly confident for the race he simply let Stoner go citing a lack of energy. Saturday drove home to me that Pedrosa has conceded superiority to Stoner on equal machinery. A fact I now begrudgingly accept.

One crash can change everything and it certainly did yesterday when Lorenzo got wiped out.

Did anyone else notice Pedrosa's pit board the lap before Stoner passed him like he was standing still. He was told to change his setting  to T . That was the last time he saw Stoner strange how held him at bay up till then. You don't think Honda applying team orders this early in the season.

Pedrosa

Pete, I don't think team orders would have made any difference yesterday.  Stone took it by the scruff of the neck and made it his own and he has been all over Pedrosa like a bad suit for two seasons. If anything, a wounded Stoner sat back longer than he might have done usually to make sure he had the strength to make the finish.

Nor do I think Lorenzo would have been a certainty had he not been taken out.  That qualifying lap of Stoner's was full of character and I saw the same stuff in the race.  Stoner is certainly a lot tougher compeditor than his critics would have us believe.

@pete

Team orders?  Hahahaha.  Yeah, I'm sure Puig would be right into that.

Stoner was pretty comfortable and it was a good move from Dani.  The longer he stayed out front the easier pickings for Stoner at the end.

The idea would have been to concede the lead to Casey, but follow him and make a charge at the end.

Stoner decided to check out (ballsy move on these tyres with 10 laps remaining), Dani tried to stay with him but made a mistake and went deep in turn one and the race was lost.

This game of nurse the tyres is retarded, but that's what Dorna (and maybe the haters) want.

Expect better tyres next year when Casey's gone.

team order

HAHAHAHA. maybe puig would take stoner next as his 2nd kid. all 46ers just upset cause rossi shown his true skill again. even hayden could beat him so easily. after barbera kicked his ass, he started to find excuses with the tyres while ben could finished the race with so damage tyre. WHAT AN ACTOR!!!.

first corner i screamed saw lorenzo taken by bautista. i though it was spies. OMG. when i put my sight to 99 number. i scream "Oh my... lorenzo taken out, lorenzo taken out!" that's nuts. i'm not happy cause i like lorenzo too. i already though stoner would be 4th or 5th this race. WOHOOOOOOOO..............

btw, hope cal stay at yamaha. rossi would try to take his spot it he go to ducati i'm sure.

that team orders

were in place occurred to me during the race benny. Given that dani winning and stoner finishing 2nd would have left stoner 5 points behind and dani just 14 behind jorge with 11 races to go, and stoner is retiring at the end of the year and dani is not, if there were team orders it probably says something. I am not sure  what actually, perhaps that honda still think jorge has them covered and even 14 points is insurmountable at this time rather than that stoner is better, but conceivably the latter.

Blatant team orders...

It was so obvious Pedro was told to slow down.... He aint gunna win the championship and they all know it, they have more chance of winning with Stoner and thought they would really take advantage of JL's bad luck by getting Stoner every last point possible... Even if it means little Pedro has to eat a second place... They were all just lucky that JL didn't race as he would have spanked them all!!
