Do I feel stupid Jack ?
No
Do you, with this bollocks?
Rossi showed just what a master he still is when it comes to racecraft and getting the best out of a bike through the whole race.
Positions 3 to 8 were running virually the same pace all race, give or take 2 or 3 tenths variance at different times. From lap 1, right up to the penultimate lap, the gap between Rossi and Hayden was between 2 and 3 seconds. The gap to Dovi / Bradl was generally around 5. He only closed in behind Hayden on the penultimate lap when Hayden came up behind Dovi/Bradl who had slowed, presumably whilst fighting each other. It was plainly visible on TV what was happening. Hayden made a great move on Bradl but Bradl got him straight back and pushed him wide. That's how Rossi passed Hayden - when he got pushed wide by Bradl
Yet you and Firebird ("although he only qualified 10th, he managed to catch up with the group, pass Hayden and finish 5th") fail to see the reality and pour on the accolades. He wasn't faster, they were running the same pace. He didn't set his bike up better than Hayden, they were running the same pace. He only caught and passed Hayden because of what happened with Hayden / Bradl, not because he was quicker.
Qualifying back in 10th gave him too much to do as with only the same pace as the others, there is little chance of moving forward. A genuine pass on Crutchlow, Spies continued ill-fortune, Barbera's lack of pace and Stoner's run-on moved him to 6th which is where he would have stayed but for Hayden's bad luck. He didn't have the pace to catch and pass, only maintain the gap
Now imagine, if he'd he had been able to do as good a job as Hayden or Barbera in qualifying and put his bike on the front row. Imagine if he'd launched that Ducati from 3rd on the grid and held it to the first corner. With his pace today and given the pace generally of riders in 3rd to 8th he could well have held any of them off in 3rd or 4th throughout the race and genuinely been looking at a podium on merit today.
HAD HE QUALIFIED HIGHER - but hey, qualifying is of no significance.
Acanada - rossi proves again qualifying on the front row is not as important as race results, mugging nicky yet again.
Not really true in reality is it?
