US MotoGP: Casey Stoner triumphs in Laguna Seca

Reigning world champion Casey Stoner fought off pre-race favourite Jorge Lorenzo to claim his second successive victory in the US Grand Prix at Laguna Seca earlier today. Factory Yamaha rider and world championship leader Lorenzo had threatened to runaway with a sixth win in the opening 10 races of the new 1000cc era when he held off intense early pressure from...

Spies

crashed due to his swing arm breaking going down the corkscrew. The list of things that have gone wrong with Spies this year, both self inflicted, unintentional or unexplained, is getting to the point of amazement. I can't recall ever seeing a guy have so many problems in one year. From cracked subframe, to being sick, to fogged up visors, to just flat out crashing on his own, it's just getting ridiculous now. It's like the guy has a curse on him or someone has a voodoo doll of him stabbing it in the back with a knife. lol.

Five by five

Fantastic performance by Stoner.  Went with the soft option on the rear and even though he found himself running third in the early stages, he didn't panic and burn out his tyres.  Jorge looked to be on rails for the first half of the race, but then the pace that Casey was forcing him to run started to show.

Perhaps Casey deliberately waited until he could take Jorge at the same spot again -  whatever the reason you could almost hear Lorenzo saying "Bugger!" into his helmet.  He tried to latch on the back of Stoner but soon went into championship mode.

And that's the big issue.  Unless Dani gets in the mix (or Bautista?) Jorge can just bide his time and pick up 20 points a round, whereas Casey has to win every race until Valencia if he wants to get back on top.  There is some possibility of a quick tightening of the championship as last year Jorge finished off the podium at Indy.  In fact if the same result happened this year then Jorge's lead over Casey would be cut to 20 points and then it will truly be gane on.

Ben - its time to step up!

Super stoner

A great race by stoner. He really seems to like laguna. There was nothing his rivals could do to match him today. Just shows how great a performance Rossi put on those years ago to fend him off and disrupt his race. Shame Lorenzo could not summon up much of a fight. He's got a championship winning head on tho.

The man's bike broke - as RawDawg said - how much bad luck can one bloke have. Given his state from yesterday's humdinging crash, he was doing ok until that happened.

Enjoyable race, never knew which way it was going until Stoner finally put a bit of air between himself and Lorenzo. Two good passes, the one on Pedrosa came out of nowhere and the way he sat the bike up to get the drive on Lorenzo was incredible.

Good battle with the Tech3 boys again, really thought Cal was going to force his way through in the last couple of laps but what a difficult track to overtake on with riders who are reasonably matched.

Good effort from Hayden too, finally got a break without unfortunate issues sticking their oar in and finally got the result over Rossi he has been threatening for many races now - Rossi's crash just put him out of his misery I guess. You have to wonder why Ducati are keen to keep him given his performace level to Hayden.

exactly

youve gotta give it to casey, great ride and props to the team for taking a gamble on the soft rears. A champions ride by him but the metronome Lorenzo is still banging out the 2nd positions. If Dani or someone else doesnt jump into the mix then you cant expect Stoner to win the title. Winning every race till the end of the season is asking a bit too much really,,,

Disappointed by Dani once again showing his hot and cold form. Its damn frustrating being a fan of his as he has shown the speed to challenge the front runners but gets bundled out by the top two far too often when it comes to race day

Rossi...LOL. righto then!... i guess he mustve made up his decision about next year when he was sliding on his ass and the red bike got smashed into the barriers. Beaten by Nicky?LOL. and just to rub salt into the wound Nicky giving him a demonstration on how to ride the Ducati proper on the cooldown lap hahahahah....

MY GOODNESS

i didn't watch the race cause i though it's hopeless for stoner after all previous race he done. but really it's a miracle he choose the soft rear tyre compare lorenzo. and it work!

but still i doubt he could win the WC. his gap is too much and impossible for the rest of the race, lorenzo not take 1st podium. hey, goodluck stoner. only you could defeat lorenzo.

DANI BOY

why he always cann't fight lorenzo in the all previous race? only in sach he reign. it's so hard for him to challenge lorenzo. if stoner not help him to decrease the gap, and if dani couldn't pass lorenzo, bye bye dani boy. the last thing he see is 2nd again in WC. that if stoner not take WC.

Tyres???

Has anyone read any good post race articles delving into the tyres, particularly casey taking the soft and doing so well with it. Has BS been making teams be over cautious cause BS doesn't want to look bad again or is it eh new Honda engine sweet on the tyres. Doesn't this mean that Lorenzo probably should have used the Soft as well. I wonder what difference it would have made if both Stoner and Lorenzo raced with the Soft?
