Warning over new £50 ‘super MoT’ for bikes

Bike MoT costs could rise to £50 under EU proposals, according to the Motorcycle Action Group. The current £29 test is set to be replaced with a more rigorous ‘super MoT’ if plans go ahead, the group says. A MAG spokesman said: ‘The proposed inspections go far beyond the current requirements for a bike MoT.  Riders and MoT stations would...

How can this be justified just for bikes? If a car loses control odds on the driver will be fine and kill someone else but if it happens on a bike odds on the rider dies and doesn't hurt anyone else. So given cars are much more dangerous to the general populas than bikes how can it be that cars require less rigouress testing? Wish the EU would pull its head out of its arse and think about things logically.

madness

how on earth can they justify £50 for a bike ... the government seriously need to stand up to the EU pencil necks. The EU change for the bike test cost 10's of millions and these new proposals will much more as every centre will need updated all at tax payers cost. The tests are longer so the centres would need to be open 24/7 with higher staff numbers or more centres...the MOT costs may recoup some of the upfront cost but I don't see why a vehicle thats not driving in mainland europe should need these tests. I suspect its a ploy to encourage sales of new vehicles by making old ones too costly to maintain.

I can't see the test requiring wheel to be removed to check drum brakes. If  the fee increases by 2o quid it is hardly going to cover the time required to remove sometimes both wheels.

But the greater argument is RISK. Government departments hate risk. If a statutory test required working on the brakes or steering who will be responsible should something go wrong. This is why the current test is visual only.

However if they do bring it in..........Just keep returning to the garage complaining that the brakes don't feel OK..

Then if you have, God forbid, an accident.............Sorry officer my brakes failed because the MOT tester messed them up...
