You ask/you answer: Am I safe going to bike meets?

I've just passed my test and have been reading lots of motorcycle websites, mostly interested in the bikes I might buy next. I've noticed that a lot of people commenting seem to be very rude, sexist and angry. I was thinking about going to a bike meet, but as a female I'm not sure I'd feel safe. I want to know if...

Depends on where you are.  Places like Matlock Bath or the Cat and Fiddle may be worth going as they are not really "bike meets" but more of a congregation.

Have done a few like Sixhills in Leicester but found them a bit dull.

I much prefer car and bike shows/meets like Ashby Folville.  My g/f really likes that one too and its a good place to meet people and chat whether about cars or bikes.

Join a forum or 2 and see where they have rideouts.  www.GBBikers.co.uk is a great family forum and doesn't really cater for any particular type of bike or rider.  Pure sports riders may find it a bit tame.

Chat to people you see local to you on bikes as there's always rideouts or events on the go.

Why not go to the Tail End at Peterborough?  Huge bike event though smaller than the May one.  If you've not been, it's great but after a few years, I only go for bargains.

I don't have a dim view of bikers, this thread is about bike meets, and from my experience of them, I have a dim view of those who I encounted when attending them. For me, going to a dealer, or a bike stop like 'Doms Bike Stop' or Quatt is a completely different experience to going to Bassetts Pole or Six hills. At the former, people go, eat, drink, ask about good routes, then go off and ride. At the latter, people ride 30 mins to get there and then stand around in their own little cliques for hours talking about rides they only dream about. I'll happily go to bike stops and dealers, and continue to do so, as there seems to be more likeminded bikers there, but I doubt i'll never go to Bassetts or six hills again. There is a difference.

Cliche

Never judge a book by its cover. Bikers have been stereotyped for years - i've been to loads and never felt unwelcome. Even used to go to Newlands corner on the YBR 125 and park with the R1's and Gixxers etc (amused me at the time), but no-one batted an eye lid. It's no different from going to a pub or a night club (whatever you're in to). Every environment has a grey area - the same can be applied in all aspects of life.

Blue Angels?

@ jimbo8098 – Uh, the Blue Angels are a US Navy aerobatic flight team. Did you mean the Hell’s Angels 1% MC?

Mostly Harmless

You will be fine as long as you avoid scooter riders – those people are wrong in the head.

(Anyone who disagrees has never seen me ride my Honda Elite (Lead) 110 in traffic.)

Bike meets

I find they're not as scary as large groups of women out together. Think that's where Hitler got his idea for namkeing his U boats 'Wolf packs'.   :)
