We should all care because today it's London & Liverpool but tomorrow it will be Loughborough & Leicester...etc. Although if you tak ethe time to look and park a bit further away you can usually find somewhere to leave a bike for gratis.

1. WCC promised security in return for charging, delivered a few token anchors, then found better things to spend the money on.  There is CCTV, but it's used purely for enforcing the parking charges, not for catching thieves or finding out who kicked your bike over.

2. They use a pay-by-phone system that (if you can find a sign explainig it) requires you to shout your credit card number down your phone (paying for that call as well) in the pouring rain.  Much of your £1 goes in charges by the CC company and the parking ghouls, which is fine because there definitely aren't any dodgy dealings and kickbacks involved.

The ostensible traffic management purpose is farcical.  Demand hasn't changed materially since before the charge was introduced, and since it's a whole-day charge, there's no incentive to shift out of the space.

It's a cash grab, pure and simple. But because the cretins running the NTBPT legal challenge fouled up badly (despite being well advised to the contrary), Their Lordships made the astonishing judgement that despite it not being "strictly legal", that WCC "should" be allowed to charge bikes to park.  That's now the case law that all you Englanders have to live with.  Enjoy your bike tax, it's here to stay.

For those who have picked up on Vortex being Illiterate, he is also ignorant of the facts. Liverpool, like any other industrialised city, has its (small) problems. But let me assure you, it is a wonderfully cultured City and the people are warm and welcoming. Now, if we can stay on the subject of parking fees? What next, Bicycle Charges?

Yes, how very Green of Liverpool Council to charge for bike parking. Unfortunately the whole government of this country, both national and local, seems to be besotted with "who can we get some money from?" and a change is needed urgently to encourage folk rather than penalise them.

Liverpool isn't a s***hole. It is a fabulous city with national heritage and many great places to visit and to be enjoyed.

The fact is all councils will now follow suit. For £1 a day, I can't say I'm complaining but I object to the London comedy of having to try and get through by phone to obtain a ticket. The prices will probably go up each year and over time there will be less bike parking spaces available, as councils extract maximum revenue from cars.

It's a shame this country has become obsessed with making money and not concentrating on encouraging people to its cities by encouraging alternative forms of transport.

A few  years ago when every other council was shedding bucket loads of staff due in part to the recession what was Westminster Council doing.... it was doubling the number of parking wardens to scour the streets and book every conceivable thing in site.

In that same year was it £48.000.000 they made in charges and penalties. well done that council. cars and bikes are a cash cow.

I am suprised that its taken that long for Liverpool, never slow when it comes to wanting and finding  capital from. elsewhere, one quarter or another, to look at motorcyclists.
