MZ return with revolutionary new engine

It might not look particularly revolutionary, but this understated 125 supermoto could prove to be one of the most significant motorcycles of 2013. Not only is it the first new product of the recently-revived, German MZ marque, it follows the firm’s historic tradition of introducing pioneering technology – in this case variable valve timing Basically, although the bottom half of the 125cc...

very interesting

Sounds ingenious if it works on a 125 it could be amazing on a bigger bike.Potentially the biggest thing engine wise for years, beats hondas method of achieving big mpg ,ie limit the revs !hardly rocket science.

Sounds like good logical forward thinking mechanics - well done MZ and Uwe for this progress. I wonder if it can be appied to anything larger than a 125 motorbike?

Revolutionary?

Yes, but not the first engine which doen't have an inlet camshaft....The Fiat 500 / Alfa  Twin Air engine which has been out for a couple of years also has no inlet camshaft, it uses a solenoid and oil pressure to open the inlet valves. The next step will be the exhaust valves and then to reduce emmisions it will be incorporated to the diesel engine.

well said falco

now, if MZ would like to fit a turbo, and an integrated starter alternator that could recover even one stop's worth of energy ready for the next start, then we'd be talking revolutionary... If your're gonna have full drive by wire may well go the whole hog, but let's retain a manual clutch for safety.

Old news?

Didn’t BMW do this on an automobile engine about 15 years ago?

Yes, more or less. If I remember right, Valvetronic kept the throttle butterflies too, but they'd spend most of their time wide open in normal use...
