Not a moped I mean a proper motorbike.

Quick true story (I hope I can get away with this)

Years ago...

The French just happened to capture a British Major. An officer brought the Major to the French general for interrogation.

The French general began ridiculing the Major for wearing "that stupid red tunic."

The French general said, "Why to you wear that red uniform, it makes it easy for us to shoot you."

The British major replied, "If I do get wounded, the blood will not show, and my soldiers will not get scared."

The French general said, "That is a very good idea."

And that's why the French Officers took to wearing brown trousers.

French bikes

France has had quite a few motorcycle producers in the past and some of these became full time manufacturers for some time. Some of these are:-

Voxan

Alycon

Dresch

Excelsior (Bourgoin)

MGC

Ratier

Scorpa

YCF

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voxan

France currently has only one full size motorcycle manufacturer (not scooters) and thats Gima

quite a few....

the ones in bold....remember a lot of early manufacturers 'bought in ' engines and put them in their own 'bicycle' frames.Firms like J.A.P. made engines that were fitted into many types of machines. There's a familiar name in the P's.

French.

Panhard

I remember the press motos in the Tour de France in the 50s and 60s mostly being Panhards, big boxer twin with exhausts that come out of the front of the cylinders and curve underneath, like this:

(Of course, during the redcoat era and pretty much up to WW1, French army trousers were mostly white, sometimes red or blue, of course. It was the Brits who were first to adopt khaki...)

Diesel bikes

There's been a few diesel bikes made in the past. Many were home grown stuff and some were developed for multi-role military bikes (HDT for example). best one I've ever seen is the dutch ThunderStar diesel bike that is stylish enough that it could sell:-
