Marcus...

I believe it was how they navigated in yesteryear.... (whenever that was!)

..Oh.. and how knuckleheads like me still prefer to do things!!

Actually I work with maps all day.. Love maps and I just love having a paper map.. never had a sat-nav... never will have! (except the one on my phone which just helps guide me to pubs when i'm too drunk to guess!!)

flyer.....

i think the ability to read a map is dying in the younger generation, so good for you.  Used to be a Transport planner and still rather look at a map than t'net or sat nav.  My proof for my theory is my eldest lad (21) who needs his sat nav to go a few miles up the road and recently, whilst we were driving in Derbyshire thought we were near Cheddar Gorge!!

Yeah Steve...

I still am a transport planner/controller... private hire!

We have 450 drivers on the road all with sat-nav.. the idiots rely on it like some sort of holy grail... no need for knowledge just follow the voice... It drives me to distraction cos I have a pretty much perfect route knowledge of the whole UK in my head and I watch helplessly as muppets get lost... The company will only back a driver up if they DO follow sat nav!! Which means the ones who do know short cuts etc are too scared to use them incase they gat a complaint from a passenger... Worlds gone crazy!!

too true......

trouble is most of them won't know a short cut because of religiously following the twat-nav for years..."computer says no"

Sat Nav

SatNav serves a purpose and it's a useful tool but maps are beter for planning as they give a better perspective on where various locations are in relation to eachother.
