had to repair a door to one of the tenants flats today, and got talking to the gent (94)as you do.....he was telling me about his time during the D-Day landings.......he was so matter of fact about everything, including being knocked unconcious by a mortat explosion and left for dead for 2 days!, those guys were awesome.

My Gramp was a prisoner of war

hated him with a vengeance, untiI I read what he'd been through.  Couldn't change anything but could explain some things

Sad thing is

they are slowly wilting away - a few more years and there will be no living link to those episodes in history - grab those moments while you still can.

My grandfathers didn't fight - 1 moved to Crewe for 18hr days building Merlin engines, the other was doing engineering stuff toward the effort in Stoke.

They all have important stories to tell.

thats

the best thing about my job-nattering to the old boys gives me perspective

the best convo I ever had tho was with two of my fave women patients and the ahem 'visits' to the food storage in the ships during the war....they were BAD girls but made me laugh at their exploits-both sadly died within a month of each other but at least they lived-their advice to me was 'grab it while u can when u can and wherever u can' but no idea what they meant
