Need help for young CX500 rider

G'day all,

I'm a 17 year old rider who proudly owns a 1980 CX500B and have been licenced and riding the bike for over a year, and i have a few problems with the machine. I have starting problems with the starter motor but cant determine what the cause is. The starter motor engages for a short time and kicks out but the starter motor keeps goin without driving anything. It takes a few minuets to get her started when she engages for a short time. Once I get the CX started, she runs on one piston for a while then the second kicks in and she runs fine. This bike is my passion and I wont allow myself to get a rid of it. would love other riders opinions and advice as it would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you've got more than one problem here.  Can't help with the starter motor issue (though someone on here will, for sure), but once the starter motor is engaging, she should run on both cylinders immediately.

First job is to get the starter sorted, until you do that, you can't sort the 'firing on one cylinder' problem.  That particular issue could be any number of things, so no point going further with that one at the moment.

If you can't find the info you need about the starter motor here, try joining the Honda Owners Club forum, it's also very good.

Best of luck with the CX, I think they're brilliant bikes.

The starter

if its not driving anything but turning could just be a sticky solenoid. Maybe your flooding the engine if its taking a while to propertly start making it run on 1 for a short while.
