tyres. Just the thing for snow. Get the right ones and they grip well in normal riding condition and in the wet. Get the wrong ones and you can really struggle in wet / damp conditions.


If you're cold, just strap a porn mag to the tank.

I'll be chopping up my bar muffs to fit them as whilst on the last bike they were a pain, on this bike I can't find a way to fit them without them interfering with controls. There's no point having them if they don't fit so might as well chop them up to get them to work.

Thanks to ridiculous insurance costs, I don't have the option of a car. Bike or public transport, or being stuck at home, are the only options, making me a fully paid up member of the Winter Hi-Viz Brigade.

I'm no fan of muffs as the idea of not being able to simply let go if I have an off is a bit disconcerting. I make do with a set of heated grips & fit a set of cheap hand guards when the weather starts to turn, fitted them in early October this year. I admit, they probably are a lot warmer than my set-up, but I feel comfortable with what I have.

And just to prove you don't need much to tackle winter effectively, I rock around on my beloved Varadero 125. A set of decent semi off-road tyres & it goes anywhere it likes. Tackling it's third winter of commuting, still yet to be ultimately defeated. A bike can do snow if it's the right bike, mine only just gets away with it, but I have managed it without any mishaps (Although never, ever again!).

A nice hot bowl of porridge in the morning.

Fish 'n chips tucked inside my jacket on the way home (tip....place the F'n'C's in a placcie bag before zipping up the jkt, otherwise you'll end up smelling like a fookin' chip shop)

I got some Gerbing G3 heated gloves on eBay for £100 and they are amazing. Fortunately, I've since bought a car, so I don't really need to use them! But i'll be keeping them for the dry but cold days - it just isn't worth commuting in the rain anymore! 3 winters of snow, ice and rain - i've had enough! lol.

Balaclavas are problematic as I wear glasses and the "windows" are steamy enough as it is. Instead I have the best winter gear ever... a small beanie/skull cap that I bought in a cycling shop. It's made to go under cycling helmets and is perfect for the bike. Highly recommended for all year rounders!!

Also my gotex jacket, trousers and boots warm as toast.

No need for heated under siuts.

and for my helmet a fog city insert double glazing for your lid, no more steamed up glasses or visor

You must not ride that far if you think heated clothes are not necessary. 12+ hours on the bike at 50 to 80 mph speeds in freezing temperatures without a heated vest is a bit much, unless you are Inuit.
