Car Dummy lighter socket

Hi,

This might sound a stupid question but I am not ashamed to ask as I am new to Car driving. What do I do with the dummy car lighter socket. I want to charge my phone and GPS. I can obviously intsall the car lighter kit but i was wondering if i want it to be a charger why do i need to install a lighter?? I mean can I not install a charging kit directly instead??

The dummy

lighter socket is just a power outlet. The retialer of your phone/gps should sell an adapter that plugs into this that you can then plug the said bit of equipment into.

I have one

for my MP3. One part of the adaptor goes into the lighter socket, the other end of the adaptor has a USB socket that I plug a USB cable into that in turn connects to my MP3. I then connect the speaker outlet cable of my MP3 to an "Aux in" port on the stereo and listen to the MP3 via the car speakers.

But

you WILL need to install the lighter bit that gets hot, if you want to use it to light your joints.

dummy lighter

They tend to put dummy lighters in cars now, I believe for safety reasons.

Stop kids playing with them and if it should get stuck the car can catch fire.

The car should still have the 12v power supply even though it may have a plastic dummy lighter.

Not everyone smokes nowdays, but most drivers will use phone chargers or sat navs that plug into the ciggy lighter.

As long as you have the adaptor / connector for the 12v supply or ciggy lighter, plug it in and your gadget should work. :smile
