Hey weasel:

First off, sorry for my ambiguous wording - it was obvious that you weren't saying you agreed with the line "guns are not the problem", I was addressing those that say that, not you.

If you go to the trouble of getting a bit of fertiliser every few days for months, and take the time to assemble the bomb, and make a timer that works, then take the trouble to get the bomb into place - avoid getting caught (and setting it off prematurely) anywhere along the way - and it goes off successfully - then right - you will kill a lot of people.  Probably a lot more than one lone gunman could.

But look at the time, effort and organisational skills involved in doing all the above.  Any clown can - in America - get a shitload of guns and bullets, not to mention body armour, smoke grenades and the like - from your handy down-town gunshop.   Or online, for that matter, or at one of these ludicrous car-boot sale affairs where you can bring a pick-up truck full of weapons and sell them to anyone with the money.

McVeigh had been trained by the army, was organised, disciplined, planned the operation (with help from others) and was not stupid.

But some freaked out psycho bastard can grab his mother's guns & gear and head off down to the local school without very much thought involved at all.  There's a big difference there.

That's the point I'm trying to make.

Gun ownership/homicide map

Take a look at this:
Gun ownership/homicides map

You'll see a direct relationship between high rates of gun ownership and murder by guns.   Anyone advocating more gun ownership is flying in the face of facts.

A touch of deja vu

We've had this conversation before on this forum and I have no doubt we'll be having them again in the future, after the next massacre.

Some useful statistics here: http://mark.reid.name/iem/gun-deaths-vs-gun-ownership.html and here:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2012/jul/22/gun-homicides-ownership-world-list.

The Mark Reid article and data are very revealing, particularly the last pair of graphs showing the difference between gun deaths (including suicides) and gun homicides. He steers clear of making a statistical evaluation, but there are days when I would kill (pun intended :winkie:) for a graph like this to show statistical correlation.

Basically, access to guns means more deaths (whether by homicide, accident or suicide). In Europe, we get upset and kill ourselves, in America they get upset and kill someone else :winkie:.

Indifference ?

to the deaths of so many children ?

The fact that the latest weirdo in the US to get his hands on so many weapons and ammunition so easily bears out the fact that so many Americans are so blase about guns, why would his mother need a battlefield weapon ?

Too true Vulc

and why would she need 5 guns to "defend" herself in a suburabn neighbourhood. Ironic given how she died.

Too many Americans see guns as the last bastian of personal freedoms eroded by the government, and cling to them like some symbol of all that is sacred.

So, the thing they love most is a device designed purely to kill other things. That about sums up the problem right there I'd say.

"preppers"

The freak's mother was what is known as a "prepper" - one who "prepares" for the time when that commie, fascist, Kenyan Muslim in the White House is going to collapse the economy, money will become worthless, and she'll have to defend her family from the seething hoards who'll steal their food.

And if you're at all dubious about any of the above, watch Fox "news" for a few months and you'll be convinced.  The radio airways are infested with right wing terrorists who'll scream the same apocalyptic ravings across the dial, 24 hours a day, coast to coast.

Naturally, because of this, Americans are all terrified of their own shadows, and buy guns & ammo to try to keep themselves "safe".

The A3075

the road that runs from Newquay to the junction of the A30. It's the road you would use to get to Penhale ranges and ATA (army training area) some road signs on that road had holes in them, size aprox 5.56mm the calibre of the M16 rifle used by the US Marines at RAF St Mawgan, yep they travelled live armed on Britains roads why I'll never know. Like the Cornish liberation army was on the prowl ? no because they regarded a rifle the same we would a screwdriver.
