Yamaha to make 250 sports bike

Yamaha has said it will make a 250cc sports bike. The YZF-R250 is expected to have similar styling to the R6, as in the above mock-up, doing the internet rounds. It’s not clear if the 2014 Indian model will come here.

A proper 250 sportbike should sound like RingdingdingdingdingRingdingdingdingding then disappear in a cloud of blue smoke.

250cc should be the learner size, not 125cc. Shoot your bureaucrats.

@SatNavSteve it's an Asia-Pacific bike

Targeted at Asia (India, China, all the other sweaty countries), Australia and Australia Junior (New Zealand) where sensible licensing laws and limits make 250 a popular choice.

Don't expect it to be anything other than an agricultural budget hack like the (sorry) "CBR250R".

Most similar to the YZF- R125?

Sorry but its bound to be much closer in design to the 125 (which is a 4 stroke single) than the R6. However that is a good thing as the 125 is a great bike...

R15 more likely

Rather than the YZF-R125 it's far more likely to resemble the Indian model R15. A reasonably pretty little bike but more 'relaxed' than the R125

Still a market?

Its great so see Yamaha bring a bike to the 250cc market! But I feel the 250cc Market is dieing down, especially with the new laws. Will as many people want to go from a 125cc to a 250cc when so many 46bhp bikes are being made meaning no need for restriction and becoming more affordable, eg the Honda 500 series and NC700's.

Rogerborg is correct - the primary market for the Yamaha YZF-R250 (as well as all the other Japanese 250cc class bikes) is Asia.  The continental European and US markets (not to mention the UK market) are really not that important anymore.
