I had an 8x2 plate on my Ducati ,tucked up so far you couldn't read most of it.When I went to Anglesey in  september the police were more than a little "interested" in it."totally unnaceptable" I was told more than once.I would therefore go for something slightly bigger.

My gsxr 1000 has an 8x3 which is just about acceptable in my eyes anyway. That's my duke next to the k4 in the pic.

Plates

Never ever had any problems with a 7"x5" plate (standard size is 9"x7"). Too small 8"x2" and you're asking for trouble. Quite rightly too.
