Depreciation per mile...........

Following on from the "How many miles this year" thread, have you ever bothered to work out the cost of depreciation per mile ridden for your bike(s) and / or car?

I have included some examples below, but generally, if I can get below 10p per mile in depreciation costs I think that's quite reasonable.  This means that a 200 mile pleasure ride on a weekend might cost £ 25.00 in fuel, but a further £ 20.00 in depreciation - a not inconsiderable cost.

To keep this simple I have ignored the cost of any repairs, or consumables, and just taken into account the cost of buying the bike (what I paid, not the new price).  I've also ignored any value left in the vehicle, so in some cases the true cost will be lower.

Example 1:  BMW R1200GS.  I bought this for £ 6,000 a few years ago, with 20k miles on the clock.  It now has 90k miles on it.  Cost per mile works out at £ 6,000 / 70,000  =  8.6p.  For this bike it has cost a few hundred pounds in repairs over the years, but has a thousand or two value left in it, so the two cancel each other out.

Example 2:  BMW R1100GS  I bought this for £ 1,300 last year, with 70k miles on the clock.  It now has 86k miles on it.  Cost per mile works out at £ 1,300 / 16,000  =  8.1p.  For this bike it has cost little in repairs over the year, but has a thousand or so value left in it, so the real cost is probably less.

Example 3:  BMW R1100RT  I bought this for £ 6,000 about 10 years ago, with 5k miles on the clock.  It now has 83k miles on it.  Cost per mile works out at £ 6,000 / 78,000  =  7.7p.  For this bike it has cost a bit in repairs over the year, and has little value remaining, but is now going to be used as spares to keep the 1100 GS on the road.

Example 4:  Ford Fiesta - bought a couple of months ago to teach my daughter to drive - Cost £ 300.00 and has done approx 2,000 miles in the past couple of months - cost per mile = 15p to date.

Would be interested to see how others come out?

Ride safe,

Shad.

Cost / mileage

CBR600F bought some years ago for £800. I've put around 34,000 miles on it so it's £800/34000 = 2.3p per mile.

TL1000 £2950/47500 = 6.2p per mile

An old NES125 scooter I had whilst in italy £295/12000 = 2.4p per mile

Fireblade £1750/ 2200 = 79.5p (not had it very long yet)

Tuono £2950/1200 = £2.46 per mile (likely to get rid of it this year as I don't use it much)

Spondon £7500 (over years)/41000 = 18.3p per mile

Depreciation

Not something I want to think about at the moment as next week I will be riding a brand new R1200RT off a dealers forecourt.

It's a good thing too look at though as it does sometimes disappear into the invisible costs of running a bike as we tend to think more about insurance, fuel and servicing.  My Fazer I purchased in 2006 for £5K with a thousdand miles on it.  It now has 8,000 miles on it and I would hope is still worth £3.5K.  Thats £1,500 / 7000 = £0.21 per mile.

While that doesn't sound so good bikes also depreciate in value with age and an 8,000-mile Fazer thou two or three years ago would have been worth more giving a smaller per mile depreciation cost.  From a time point of view the Fazer has depreciated at a rate of £250 per year and I am more than happy with that.

Either way, be it mileage or time, it seems that depreciation is less of an issue for those of us that tend to keep bikes for a long time.

Shad

I think my bike has a Variable cost of 25p/mile but I'll only know the fixed cost (or total cost of capital) when I come to sell it but I i sold it now I would estimate another 40p/mile

2010 ZZR 1400

I approximate the following variable costs

£200/4000miles = 5p service costs

£120/4000miles = 3p rear tyre

£100/10000miles = 1p front tyre

fuel approx £1.30ltr/8miles a ltr= 16.25p fuel

Not added in chain etc

Fixed costs 9k purchase price, now say 5K - so £4000/10,000 miles 40p/mile

Strange way of accounting........

Maybe we'll see the reason of this thread.

Now, Shad, Just for fun:

You buy a '52 Black Shadow for £1,000 in 1970, which is now valued, depending on condition, at £25,000 - £50,000, and you have covered 40k miles on it. How are you calculating depreciation?

Also, a real accountant would calculate based on replacement cost. Eg you buy a bike for £7k in 2005 and a new one currently costs £11k and your trade-in is £3k, then the loss is £8k, this does not account for the loss of interest on the capital.

Shad, I know you are no thicko, just sussing out the next stage of the game.

Regards

Sam
