Video: KTM 1190 Adventure R first ride

King of serious off-road, KTM, has BMW's mighty GS firmly in it's sights with the new 1190 Adventure. The Austrian manufacturer has played to its strengths, focusing on ergonomics, agility, light weight and performance using a V-twin from the RC8R superbike. It's a big step forward from the go-anywhere KTM 990, but can it win a bigger slice of the...

Looking good

Looks like it's gonna be a great bit of kit, anyone know how much it's going to cost? It's a bit of a shame KTM decided against going with the 990's badass Dakkar styling, but I can imagine that put quite a few people off the old bike, as it had such an aggressive offroad look. The 1200GS crowd is obviously who KTM want to sell this bike to, so it's understandable they went with more conservative stying. I know some people are put off by the look of the 990, but for me it's one of the best looking bikes ever.

Glad that KTM seem to have gone with their usual mental levels of power.

The best bike just got better. Go on KTM, make a 790 Adventure twin, and make our bike choice even harder.

First ride? exclusive ?

Great looking bike top of my list for 2013 if it rides like it looks BUT come on MCN who are you kidding with exclusive first ride bullshit did BIKE magazine ride an early version months ago and the pre production of both the sd1190 Adventure and the R in an extensive test in last Novembers issue not a report on a quick 20 min ride which told us nothing we didnt know and most of article was just a long winded way of repeating the spec to sell some mags in a low sales week in January !

real world

Nice to hear a biking journalist mention "the real world" and torque for a change. Usually they just go on about power and revs, forgetting to mention all this power is above 12,000 RPM and the price for it is the powerband of a gutless racing bike we're supposed to enjoy on the road.

im sure its a good bike but the looks kill it for me as i like the old 990 for looks as its close looking to a dakar bike i think.

so we having a 990 vs 1190 test with off road thrown in as a good few 990s do go off road ?
