Triumph Tiger 1050 Sport unveiled

Triumph has unveiled its new Tiger Sport 1050, which was first spotted by MCN in March 2012, and again in a more finished form in November. Power is improved by 10bhp over the outgoing model (now up to 123bhp) and the bodywork has been redesigned. The bike also features a new swingarm, wheels and suspension. Prices for the Tiger Sport will be...

I did not stated that the 'new' Tiger looks like a GS.

The Tiger 800XC, the 1200 Explorer and now the Trophy are clearly copying BMW and I don't like that. As an ex-Triumph owner I don't like that, they lost originallity, that's it. The bikes might be good and the engine surely is unique but they look like BMWs!

My originall complains are about the 'new' in the front. Why not update the model as it deserves, small changes do not make it new. And I was expecting a really NEW model in this segment. Disappointed.

Crawsue, where exactly do you see any 'innovative engineering'???? Please state some of the technological pioneering technologies Triumph is NOT copying:

I've got to say I don't consider Triumph's bikes to be copies of BMWs, the obvious difference being the engines but if we are going down that road, you could say that every 4x4 is a copy of a Willys jeep from WW2 as I'm sure manufacturers got their original ideas from that and saw a gap in tha market. Were Honda, Yamaha etc all slated for making V twins coz they they were copying Harleys, Ducatis etc? Bikes in the cruiser/adventure/sports etc categories all have a basic shape and if you change that shape, its not going to be 'fit for purpose'. I think the BMW owners slating Triumph as copies are just jealous of their success but its a free world and people buy what they want. Personally, I've never understood why you would make an off-road bike with cylinders that stick out like a BMW. You don't see other manufacturers going down that route which they could if they wanted!

Christ ElDiablo where the the hell are you from (sounds like from the local BMW dealers). The difference between a Elxplorer and the GS are like chalk and cheese, granted it's a adventure bike but the engineering is completly different, same with the 800.If Triumph want to copy they would have had the flat twin but nobody in there right mind would develop that old technoligy.I'm not knocking the GS if thats your cup of tea then good luck. From what i read you'll need it,just make sure you join the AA Relay.

I do agree with you on one point, the Trophy is a blatent copy style wise and like you say if i want a Triumph i don't want a BMW clone and buy the way who makes the Mini !.

Seems to me Diablo you are looking for an excuse and coming on here ranting makes you feel better cos you are not entirely happy with what you are about to do.This is about the Tiger Sport and a mighty fine bike it is.

Jealous?

Are u a psicological analyst? Sorry men, thanks but no thanks. I had a Triumph and now I have a BMW. And I am going to buy another one. I also had Honda's, Yamaha, HD and 2 Buells before. I loved all of them for what they were. I loved my Triumph because it was unique. Now it is a copy of successful BMW models. It is not my personal opinion, it is a fact. The product manager of the company recognized it in public when the media posed the question so your deductions about jealousy do not apply here. I am talking facts here. The similarities are annoying. Triumph might be your British brand and I do understand your loyalty but for me they lost their charisma.

The Triumph take on the Adventure market is in there style,as they see it.There may be cues to BMW but thats all.All the top manufacturers are in there and all have similarity's.Threre's not a great deal of difference style wise.Look at the car market and the similarity's there. It's the way business works.

You invest huge amount's of money in a new product you want the best return possible.Look at the Kawasaki 1L Versys it seems to be a none starter and that's the difference between that and the Explorer which has got out the starting blocks running.Your argument's just don't stand up ELdiablo and that's all i have to say.

And that's all I have to say (promess?)

MCN Poll: Are Triumph right to follow BMW so closely?

54,29% of MCN followers share the NO answer. You should check what people is saying around different forums. There is a lot of riders out there that feel disappointed just like me. Not a minority.

From British Bike Magazine (January 2013):

" ... so it's a shame Triumphs failed to give their bike it's own identity. A Pan looks like a Pan, an FJR looks like an FJR, but the Trophy looks like a BMW".

Good God, quit whining that they didn't change it ENOUGH. They took the Tiger 1050 and called it the Tiger 1050 sport, and made it a bit sportier. That's it. Just because they updated a model (with the things people had been asking for on the 1050, I might add) doesn't mean that Triumph suddenly *owes* everybody a completely revolutionized new model. They also released the Explorer this year and the Tiger 800 the year before.

As for the triumph copying BMW, I could care less. In any case the 1050 sport seems to be in a league of its own. The 1050 was already the most sporty and road oriented of the "adventure touring" bikes, by far, and this one's just going to make it that much more so. I for one, would love to ride one.

Last year, Triumph had the highest sales figures for bikes over 600cc so it looks like people don't care who copies who. With the current economical climate, we in this country (UK!) should revel in this success. My local dealer says he can't sell Tigers (800 & 1200) fast enough and theres a waiting list some of the time.

No doubt that the GS 1150....

was the real deal for long distance adventures...the 1200 has sold phenominally...but many long term BMW owners suggest that build quality and service problems have diluted the image ,somewhat. How different things might have been if KTM hadn't made one of the motorcycling world's worst commercial decisions.....when they dismissed Ewan and Charlie's long way round jolly. The large capacity 'bike market has been turned on it's head in the past 5 years, as all the major manufacturers have watched the demopraphic grow older and less "superbike" focussed....who would have guessed that Ducati would have even considered Multistradas and Diavels. But putting the peeps with the cash on any kind of wheels is what it is all about, nobody can say that Triumph arn't making a pretty good fist of covering all the bases. Finding a way of encouraging new riders is the next focus....just look how H_D painted themselves into a corner by non-diversification.

HD

Well HD is number 1 in sales worldwide and Triumph only became the leader on sales in UK (makes sence). BMW is kicking Triumph's ass worldwide so probably some people do care about who is copying who...
