Video: African adventure - part two

After riding through Spain and putting the Ducati Panigale S and BMW S1000RR through their paces on a track day at Almeria, our intrepid explorers head for the ferry to Africa before heading back to the UK.

1199 v S1000RR

So I always really enjoy MCN and the video impressions made; that being said I thought I should add that the Ducati really isn't 6 grand more than the BMW.  In reality if you buy a base model with ABS the Ducati is about 2 grand more than the BMW.  It really isn't fair to compare a Ducati 1199S with it's forged wheels and Ohlins suspension against the BMW S1000RR which has neither.  the story gets more interesting for 2013 because the S1000RR HP4 now has dynamic suspension and forged wheels and that would be fair to compare against the 1199S but the price difference is still just about 2 grand.  Also worth mentioning since no website or magazine does, BMW WILL charge you a freight/delivery charge, which here in the United States is almost a grand!  Ducati does not charge this.

Hi Brian,
Yep, we’re not comparing absolutely like-for-like and we’d have preferred an HP4 to run against the Panigale S (but BMW didn’t have one available at the time), but the feature isn’t about comparing the two machines. It’s all about taking two of the most extreme sportsbikes and proving you can go anywhere and do anything with them. And we could’ve really chosen any two sportsbikes for the job.
The irony, though, is the BMW is a better machine, even against the higher-spec Ducati. If we’d have got an HP4, it would’ve blown it into the weeds.
Cheers

Ducati Delivery

@ brianhevans – I was in a Ducati dealership recently, and there was a delivery charge (of $600 to $700 range) on the price sticker of each bike.
