buying a new bike from a dealership

i plan to buy a new bike in March when the 13 plates come out, what kind of deal could or should i expect to get on a 62/12 plate, i used to work in the cycle industry where year old bikes that hadn't sold would get vastly reduced in price is it the same in the motorcycle industry ?

Any tips on what to say or how to get a "decent" deal from the salesman

New bike

Are you talking a pre-registered bike on a 62/12 plate with zero mileage? If so your talking 20% off,but remember the length of the warranty.

Discounted new bikes

Firstly, it depends on the brand.  Don't expect a discount on a Honda or BMW for example.  (Although you will probably be able to negotiate some clothing or accessories thrown in as part of the deal.

Sometimes dealers, sometimes supported by manufacturers, will discount last years stock when this years bikes start arriving but this is more common if this year's machine is a new model - so you'll need to do a bit of research to see what new bikes are on their way. The other way to get a good deal on a new bike is to but a pre-reg. This is where the dealer has registered the bike before he has sold it either to keep his figures up or meet sales targets.
