Ligament and tendon injuries can be bad, and valentino's shoulder problem probably had more of a long term effect on him than his leg fracture .Rossi ended up having the same course as a simple fracture for his horrible looking fracture, with primary closure a few days after the injury; I would be thanking dainese or whomever supplied his racing suits at the time, since the injury would seem to have been contained by his leathers if not by his skin; the usual problem with a compound fracture apart from the associated soft tissue injury consequent on the violence necessarily for such an injury is contamination of the wound with dirt.

I actually thought both riders did well to come back and win races after such injuries.
