Valentino Rossi ecstatic with Sepang speed

Valentino Rossi could barely contain his delight after he finished the Sepang MotoGP test with the third best time on his much anticipated return to Yamaha’s factory squad. After a disastrous two-year spell with Ducati, Rossi answered questions about whether he was still fast enough to challenge dominant Spanish duo Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo in emphatic fashion in Malaysia. The nine-times...

So much hate?

Guys, we all know Casey was the most naturally gifted rider out there but there's no point in deriding other riders who still have the cojones to ride. I would love to know his real reason for retiring as he seems to change his story in every interview that he gives. If he gave up because he had a young family and what happened to Simoncelli affected him, he should just come out and say it. Nothing wrong with that in the slightest.

Reckon your spot on as to the correct reason he retired and your also correct there is nothing wrong with that.
It is a real shame he has retired so young and deep down I am sure he will regret it eventually but it has happened so let's concentrate on the future instead arguing pointlessly about the past.

quite right farnackle, seems every yellow panty wearer and his dog is out inforce giving his 2 cents. After two years in the doldrums where Florence was chasing his ass and moaning every excuse under the sun to Ducati when he didnt deliver, we see that .4 seconds behind the leader in testing has bought back the frothing-at-the-mouth zombies eager to rebuild the image of their once great hero.

Florence the Goat??  yeah if you mean one of the grass eating kind...

And the TRUE GOAT? the man in my display pic

No need to be silly. It is close to impossible to over-rate rossi . If he is past it which I don't believe is the case myself then that doesn't detract from what he did previously, which was to stay at the pinnacle of gp bike racing for more than a decade which as mick doohan says actually is close to impossible.

I am an avid stoner fan but even I didn't think he had his heart completely in it  last year which he commenced at the age of only 26.

Rossi v Stoner?!

There never really was a great rivalry between the 2 of them on the races track. Sure there was Laguna 08 but other than maybe another 3 or 4 incidents that was it. No one will ever compile a brilliant load of footage of fairing bashing, close racing down the years of them together 'cos it just wasn't like that.

Yeah they had the occasional spats in press conferences/interviews but they did not enjoy classic racingclose  battles together. The rivalry was all brought about by the 'crazy' fanatics for the 2 riders - it was fan rivaly not racing rivalry.

Two things of note in your post

1. You admit Rossi ''was a once great hero'' - it's yet to be proved that he's finished.

2. Correct - Muhammad Ali was the greatest - but he had times of adversity (lost 5 bouts) from which he recovered. Ali was also - a clown and a showman like Rossi and was much derided by those like Nostro who could not abide such behaviour.

ALI is remembered as the Greatest for his glory years and Rossi will be remembered as the Goat for his.

Doohanfan - fair play mate - you are probably the most fair-minded person on this forum - respect.

Rossi is a natural born racer - it is undeniable, the wins proves that. Yes he set himself apart from many other riders who he raced again because of his flair, charisma and famous celebrations track side BUT he transcended the sport and brought a much needed media attention and sponsors to Motogp.

It has been happening through the years and throutgh all sports as long as there has been competition. The likes of Sheene, Agostini, Mcenroe, Agassi, Sugar Ray leonard, Ali, Tyson, George Best, Maradonna, Usain Bolt, Beckham and even Gazza - without them their relative sports profiles at their times would not have been the same in the media.

When sports stars are able to to this it always adds to the sport as well as the individual. How many riders are on the grid because of Rossi? And in truth how many TV companies and corporate money machines would be rushing towards the bike world because they know Pedrosa (as good a rider as he is) will excite the world and sell a lot of product?

At the end of the day its a business which evolves with cash and if the money drops then it is always to the detriment of the sport concerned. we need more like Rossi, Marco was obviously the next guy who would have had similar potential sadly. As a racing fan it should be about the racing and who comes home first wins....but the reality is all sports need individual characters who can create interest.

Rossi vs Stoner take #2

"There never really was a great rivalry between the 2 of them on the races track. Sure there was Laguna 08 but other than maybe another 3 or 4 incidents that was it."

Sort of true - but not entirely.  Catalunya '07: Rossi off pole, Stoner off 4th; at the finish, Stoner from Rossi by  0.069, after multiple passes by each on the other - and with Pedrosa in the mix almost all the way.  The Yamaha had all but caught the Duc for top speed by then and had a significant advantage in cornering and braking and the win came down to racecraft.

Phillip Island, '09. Yamaha the WC winning bike, Rossi 5 P.I. victories in the premier class to Stoner's then 2. Stoner off pole, Rossi off 2nd, 0.05 slower.  Stoner held Rossi off, played him into all but a terminal mistake, forcing him to back off in order to finish.  Rossi stated he'd never had to fight so hard for 2nd in his career - and he was 1.93 back - Stoner pulled 1.2 seconds on him in the last lap!

L.S '08 gets the attention because of the visual drama of 'the pass' - which was less racecraft than a potentially fearful crash avoided by the fact that Stoner knew where Rossi would have to end up when he re-entered the track and avoided being there.  Elsewhere in that race Rossi certainly did exercise racecraft (extending into dubious tactics) that was successful; because Stoner's examples of  his racecraft resulting in success over Rossi have been more subtle and certainly uncontroversial, they tend to be forgotten by those to whom a race isn't exciting unless it's a cagefight.

We have to accept your superior knowledege on MotoGP history because you ride an old CBR?

You state that Rossi is no better than Stoner and we have to admit it?

OPINIONS ARE LIKE ASSHOLES MY FRIEND... EVERYBODY HAS ONE!! You chose the wrong blog to try to impose yourself, here most of the people understands that 9 World Titles = better than 2 + Retirement! My little Nostro tea cup puppie...

Doohanfan : rossi cant be overated? cmon man he bombed on the ducati when so much was expected of him, in fact his adoring fans thought it was a foregone conclusion that he would win. Rossi overated? yes i think so!

Saturn- "of their once great hero" - meaning the hero of YOUR merry troops . Never did i see  him as a hero. But as the ramblings of this site shows, there are many that would follow him off the edge of a cliff if he just uttered the word. Yes Flo is revered as a god by the brainwashed, i aint denying that

Rossi aint got a candlie to Ali in terms of showmanship. I simply dont understand what people blither on about Florence having 'charsima; and character??..? what so him jumping around the screen like a man-child, love letters to his bike, dopey victory celebrations and to explete every now and then in an interview or press conference has many of his adoring fans salivate and revel in his 'character'.....?

Side note, what a shame we missed out on 3 years of Ali in his prime. And your right racingfan99 people do transcend their sport which reaches them into greatness. Ali and his boxing, coupled with his generosity, political stances have all contributed to his greatness. Rossi IMO doesnt bear that mark apart lofty celebration amd tax dodging....? lol
