Death crash policewoman escapes charges because ‘phone was in her lap’

A policewoman who caused a crash that killed a motorcyclist while talking on her phone has escaped prosecution after saying the device was in her lap. The Crown Prosecution Service says there is not enough evidence that Collette Carpenter, 23, committed an offence. Carpenter, a special constable who has handed out at least six fines for using a phone while...

Death crash policewoman

Is there ANY motorcyclist out there who has NOT had a near miss with a phone wielding idiot on four wheels??? Until the crime of phone use while driving ESPECIALLY where it causes injury or death, is punished severely, then it will sadly continue unabated. The motorcyclist of course will be the greatest victim, as we are already seen as in some way deserving of injury or death due to our chosen form of transport. My heartfelt condolences to Mr Bartholomews family, may he rest in peace.

Policewoman?

No, not a policewoman. A special constable. Not the same thing at all. Not even part time..... they do it as a hobby, sometimes for as little as 4 hours a month. Some ok, others pitiful. And looking at her photo, unlikely to make the cut to be a real policewoman carrying that weight. Nevertheless, how the CPS can deem there to be insufficient evidence is beyond me. True, if the phone was used hands-free, then no offence of using hand held device while driving. But no evidence of causing death by careless driving? If she's pulled out in front of the motorcyclist when the motorcyclist had right of way, then was she driving with due care and attention? There is a legal doctrine known as, in Latin, 'Res Ipsa Loquitur'. Which translates as, 'The facts speak for themselves'. Often referred to in such cases, and apparently appropriate here.

who gives a fuck about her status

Special Constables have all the legal powers of their regular counterparts when on and off duty and, as of 1 April 2007, can use their powers throughout England and Wales. Prior to this date, Special Constables' powers were restricted to within their force areas and neighbouring forces only......,sounds the same thing to me.........this bucket of lard killed an innocent biker probably phoning for her next order of chips.she sounds guilty to me for what she done.

Private Prosecution Needed

This smug bitch should be inside on a charge of manslaughter, not free to kill again. If Davids family launched a fund to pay for a private prosecution, I know U.K. bikers (and especially MCN readers) would contribute quickly and fully to help see justice properly served.
