Massif Central

Travelling down to the Massif Central in June for a few days. Can anyone recommend a town/village with a good campsite (or just a good campsite) to use as a base for touring the area.

Massif Central

Vallons Pont D'Arc is full of campsites, but being on the banks of the Ardeche if you go in high season prices are steep, typically 20E a night for a riverside site. You can hire a canoe for a 25/15/10km paddle down the Gorge D'Ardeche which apart form one short section is pretty tame and stunningly beautiful. Just cover your eyes when you drift through the geriatric German nudist colony!

Further North if you want a larger town le Puy en Velay in the Auvergene volcanic region is very pleasant and has a campsite smack bang in the middle of town

Further south you have the Tarn Gorge, the valley that passes E/W under the Millau bridge, once again a popular tourist area, especially with the French, you wilol have no difficulty finding somewhere to camp wityh the provisio about prices above.

There's enough space for camping wild, which although not strictly legal in France is largely tolerated as long as you use common sense.

Thanks for that. Not toured this area before so any advice very welcome. Looking for somewhere fairly central in order to ride out for day trips.

You might also want to look at

the websites for gitesnbikes and Riders Retreat, not sure if either is suitable for camping, but may be able to advise, and both are fairly near the north of the massif, Clermont Ferrand sort of area, so you'll get to those first, think they both also offer guided tours :smile
