That's my point exactly. It just happens to be at a new track that no one else will get to test at. Whether dorna not having regs in place to prevent the most money having an advantage that in theory should be easy to police is down to them or not depends on how cynical you are...

The whole scenario is a huge expense for the top 4 (+ 1).
So much for teams saving money, clearly the win comes at a price

Probably not at CoTA.  Being a local, I can say that the Honda will out horsepower the Yamaha.  Lorenzo states all the time that Honda has more speed. 

 

CoTA is very long and high speed.  Lorenzo and Rossi will have to work very hard to make sure their corner exits set them up for the best drive out onto the straights.  If their lines are not spot on, Pedro and Marquez will leave them behind.

 

The Ducati has plenty of power so what they lack in cornering ability can be made up on the high speed sections.

 

If anyone ever thought MotoGP was a procession at the current tracks, just wait until the inaugural CoTA round... you'll really see some spread out bikes!!!  The CRTs are going to look even more pathetic than usual by comparison to the prototypes.

TV commentators often refer to the speed of the Honda without looking to see how quickly the rider came out of the last corner which gives them a head start in a drag race. Pedrosa and Stoner were brilliant at sitting the bike up early to get the power down as soon as possible. At PI lat year when Stoner took Lorenzo, you had the usual comment from Ryder and Moody about the power of the Honda, but neither noticed (or mentioned perhaps) the line that Stoner took out of the corner which was tighter and in which he was upright sooner. He was gaining on Lorenzo coming out of the corner, not just halfway down the straight. They've done the same with Pedrosa when he has clearly got the bike upright early. Marquez will probably do the same as he is one of, if not the most dynamic rider out there.

There's more to it than a bike just having a bit more power than the other. If an M1 gets a good corner exit, the Honda can't pass it down a straight and we've seen it many times, particularly with Dovi and the satellite Hondas last year.

This track threw up a great F1 race last year, so we can only hope it does the same for the bikes. It's a pity only two teams can afford to go there for a test but it is no disadvantage to the others in reality, as the reality is that only one of 4 riders at the test stands any chance of winning, so the rest are on their own level playing field. However, in an age when cost cutting is supposed to be top of the agenda, it would have made more sense to have put the track off limits for a private test. If other teams were closer in respect of performance but not budget, then it would have been a very real disadvantage and unfair.

And it would have been more interesting if they'd all have started from scratch.

May the hand of Hailwood bless you. Fantastic post, although I have gone through it many times in the past the forum soon forgets. You nailed it, respect.

I get very bored with the comments of the Honda's are always the fastest, the Ducati has more power and speed than anything else, Aprilia must be cheating because their bike is so fast.

Further to your valid point; all these bikes a very fast and or the best in their class but the real secret of success is the pilot. Stoner' success in 2007 was not just because he had the fastest bike but clearly the best electronics package and the nonce to make the best use of it. More durable tyres helped a bit too but Stoner and Ducati tuned the gyros to perfection. Also the sooner you pop the bike up the sooner the gyros tell the ECU to apply full power and full steam ahead. Not just the throttle hand! Pedrosa has had the hang off and push up style for years now too. Kind of like... open throttle very early and apply the power by lean angle. Doohan had a similar approach but he really did have to control the beast with just his right hand.

I have put forward the same defense of Aprilia WSBKs several times too. Are RSV4's one of but not "the" most powerful bikes on the grid? Yes of course, but that little additional burst of top speed came from Biaggi. You could fill the whole grid with works RSV4's but Biaggi would still fly by most of them on the straights because he is already doing 5 mph faster than the competition before they even finish a corner. His precision sliding and style was simply astounding.

I agree having the most horsepower is always an advantage.... but only if you can put it to the ground.
