Qatar MotoGP: Lorenzo starts title defence with pole position

Factory Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo will start the first race of 2013 from pole position after seeing off Brit Cal Crutchlow in Q2. Crutchlow again set the fastest lap on his first run in Q2, but after a tyre change Lorenzo set a fastest time of 1:54.714 to beat Crutchlow by 0.202s. Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa set the third fastest time...

New swingarm doesn't mean new bike though - most teams try new or different swingarms throughout a season? Plus it may just be one of last year's untried parts?

Where's Buell, reporting straight from the paddock when you want him..

Bulto..

..I wasn't suggesting a new bike, but I think this variation is obviously different from the version Rossi last rode. You're quite right about it possibly being one of the "untried" parts that Herr Grobmeier talked about though..

It's new

If it has a new swing arm, new fairing, new fuel tank, and think Ryder said last night new electronics positioning, then it's not last years bike.

On a scale of ...

It's the GP12, same main components of frame, engine. Just because they reposition a few things doesn't make it a new bike from last year's. From what's been said by Grobmeier, these are things that weren't tried thoroughly on the bike last year or not tried at all.

It was last year's bike when they were riding it last year trying different parts - so what's the difference?

The 'new' GP13 bike is the mule that is being ridden by the test rider in tests, it's not being raced.

Exactly Bulto ...

... and just to add, Dovi's got a new little fairing 'cos he's little - it's not rocket science but it works for me.

Oh well

Guess it was last years bike, and Dovi was doing the old Hayden trick of getting a fast lap in qualifying, flattering for half the race, then fading away to nowhere. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose, eh?
