Can't get 2nd gear

After my careful winter lay up on first time I switched it on I can't get 2nd gear, is there anything simple I can try ?

Otherwise  will have to ride 15 miles in 1st gear to get to nearest bike shop/garage. Its only done careful 11000miles from new.

lay up

Have you run the engine to normal temp (15 mins)?

Have you tried pulling the clutch a few times just in case it`s stuck (plates)?

You could try holding the clutch lever back with string or a cable tie with engine hot.

I hope the drive chain has not tightened up over the lay up.

Q,when was the last oil change and what oil is in it?

sucks

Try checking your clutch fluid if its a hydrolic clutch

if not check your oil in your bike see if its low or turned colour

Had same problem with an aprillia I had it was the clutch fluid was a leak in the slave cylinder

Its a Bandit

so its a cable.....

Is it adjusted properly? Too much slack? (there should be some  slack at the lever, 3 or 4 mm or so but not much more...

Are you rotating the back wheel when selecting gears with engine OFF?

Can't find 2nd gear

Well update, I changed the oil the usual 10-40 performance. I managed after the engine was on for 15 minutes I final with a clunk got it to get 2nd and I launched myself up the road, its very rural round here with no traffic I did 4 miles and to 70mph through all the gears and then 4 miles back and then I stopped and then couldn't get 2nd gear again. Apart from that its the usual perfect looking bike, its never seen rain and always kept in a well ventilated garage so no rust

Ian

Any ideas, some suggest the clutch plates sticking, but imno mechanic and looking through the hayes manual its far too complicated for we to do

In to 2nd with a clunk......

What were the other gears like after that?..

What was it like going back down the box into 2nd?....

If it launched you up the road as you say then it does sound clutch related........

can't find 2nd gear

I just went out for a long spin (about 30 miles) The bike behaved as its normal superb self, changing down gears was fine and up from2nd was normal, it was getting better find finding 2nd, it normally took 2 or 3 goes to get it.

It has a MOT tomorrow and ill inform the mechanic about the gear and see what they say, I'll keep you posted, thanks for the tip about holding in the gear lever and then finding the gear

cheers

Ian
