Dani Pedrosa rues missed opportunity in Assen

If the MotoGP world title continues to elude Dani Pedrosa at the end of 2013, the Spaniard might well look back on yesterday’s Assen race as a game changing moment. With main title rival Jorge Lorenzo well short of 100% fitness after he broke his left collarbone in a high-speed practice crash on Thursday, the 26-lap race was a golden opportunity...

Not his day

Ah, there's no point being too hard on Dani, everybody has their off days, all the greats included. If I was to be critical of Dani it's that he should have busted a gut to stay near Cal once he came past, as history has shown us that a last lap battle involving Mr Marquez quite often ends up with someone losing ground.

That's why in Spain we call you Danny Llorosa (wimp)

Maybe you'd all feel differently if you had a catalogue of injuries similar to Dani's? Then again, probably not I guess.

As 'Claw' says, he's still leading the Championship despite a bad day but that said, he has to get back to winning ways soon. It's looking like a great 2nd half of the season.

It's easy to forget that this time last year Jorge was 40 points in front of Dani, despite Jorges heroics Dani is well up on him and has the 2nd half of the season and easily his/hondas best races to come. If anyone should be worried it should be Yamaha.. Gonna be interesting to see which yam puts up a fight this time, Jorge didn't last year.

So if you wanted to'fix'a race...safest option is to dick around with the tyres to mysteriously bring the favorite out of winning contention...but not off his bike. I guessthat'd be easier if there was just one tyre supplier contracted to the race director...oh, wait....

While you were switching the tyres around no doubt you could also ensure that two other title contenders could have massive accidents to reduce their race effectiveness and no doubt ignore the old protagonist having an overly large fuel tank and 1200 cc engine, its a good job his old uncle carmelo can help him out from time to time................... or maybe dani's set up wasnt quite right, no surely it couldnt be that simple

I think dani needs to be worried

He had a golden opportunity and blew it. Id really like to see him win the title this year; its his best chance, and the door is closing. Marquez will get stronger and stronger in the future...yes last year dani dominated the second half...was that because they were honda tracks, or simply because dani had nothing to lose and went for it, while jorge had everything to lose and didnt want to blow it. The shoe is on the other foot this year, and jorge is the one who will be taking the risks, while dani will be the one who will be feeling the pressure. Jorges ride at assen will be making dani sick with frustration at a blown opportunity, and rossis confidence boosting win will mean another rider who will be attacking dani for points now. Marquez passing him to steal more points probably didnt help his mood much either. Dani is at a crossroads now....assen may have just been the turning point in the season( there always seems to be one every year), and unless dani bounces back in germany or the states, he is in big trouble. Sachsenring is not a jorge track, so he has a good chance, although now rossi is hungry, as dani is not the only one who wants to get some momentum  while lorenzo is still hurt .

1 thing is obvious, MM handles tyre problems better than Dani. But Dani is class at Sachsenring. The little dude is verry good at getting the RCV upright after a slow corner and giving it some serious throttle.

Warriors

While I think calling Dani a wimp is a bit much I think the comparison between his performance today and Jorge Lorenzo's displays that he lacks the last tiny fraction to make him into a true winner. The kind of 'strength' that Rossi, Lorenzo, Cal (Casey) and even Marquez frequently display and can dig out when the chips are down. There is no doubt Dani is one of the fastest in the world but performances like today, or the situation post Le Mans 2011 and his subsequent disappearance (yet 10 pin bowling and motocrossing) make me believe he doesn't possess that last champions mentality and so to win the championship 'even' once would require others' misfortune as he rides the best bike on the grid.
