Cal Crutchlow signs for Ducati

Cal Crutchlow has taken a massive career gamble by accepting the tough challenge of transforming Ducati’s flagging fortunes in MotoGP next season. The British rider rejected an improved pay deal to stay with the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 squad and will be reunited with former teammate Andrea Dovizioso on a factory Desmosedici in 2014. The former World Supersport champion had until last...

If 100% of a survey group give the same answer they can all be wrong. Opinions and expectations are all too often confused with fact.

91.7% of race fans...

..no fuck all anyway. It's no biggie..

Cal's got the class, the style and now the bulging wallet not to pay attention to some childish poll.

Dovi on the other hand would take notice and would end up crying into his decaf latte at that kind of news...

He's just not factory enough..

I think some of you need to wise up to the facts of where Cal was placed. He had asked for a factory spec bike in his Tech3 team (with whom he has an exceptionally close relationship) to give him better early race performance. He was told no it won't happen so he got his head down, worked round the problems with his team and started delivering outstanding results. Then he is told Espargaro has signed a deal with Yamaha factory who will give him a factory bike in Tech3 in 2014 and a full factory ride in 2015. At this point Cal had no contract for 2014, Bradley had one and now Espargaro had one.

Do the maths / smell the coffee / get real / whatever people! Yamaha shafted Cal to get a Spaniard. It shows how professional Cal has been that since he was told all this he has really delivered on track and elsewhere. Yamaha then tried a face saving exercise as they could see how bad it looked for them (especially in Britain) but they had boxed themselves in. And if Cal had stayed for one more year at Tech3 where would that have left Bradley? Yamaha have acted in a shabby and insulting way to Cal and he was left with no choice but to go elsewhere and that only left Ducati and a big bucks ride for 2 years.

Can someone explain to me why should Cal have to eat humble pie at Yamaha knowing he would be ditched in 2015? He is a professional rider risking his life every weekend and he will now be treated with respect.

Except on here of course.

Factory Yamaha ?

Cal has been at Yamaha for long enough now to know what entails a factory bike. It's certainly not the usual Tech3 machine, it's not even the one Rossi rides, no, the only "factory" Yamaha is the one Jorge slings his leg over. It's in Jorge's contract, same as it used to be in Rossi's, that he (Jorge) alone gets the best spec bike with a clause that Yamaha can and will provide the same for others if he (Jorge) gets injured and/or Yamaha feel the need to take points from HRC to help him (Jorge) and/or Yamaha themselves in pursuit of the riders or manufacturers titles.

Cal has first hand experience of this especially this season when Jorge got injured, suddenly it was he and Rossi who were at the front at Assen and Sachsenring. Now HRC have the same policy but not within the factory team, the HRC factory riders have the same choices and can therefore ride equal machines, Bradl and Bautista have nearly the same but not quite, but get a boost if the factory team needs a bit of help as we saw at Laguna.

Cal knows he will never get a Jorge spec Yamaha unless the bloke is hurt or HRC are leading the title chase but at Ducati he will get the best bike they have. It might not at the moment be good enough to beat a Tech3 Yamaha but it is the best bike Ducati have and he knows that he won't be short changed in that respect like he is now. In the future that Ducati will get better, that has to happen, and when/if the tyre war opens up again it will get better still with bespoke rubber and all that comes with a proper wage that sets him up for life.

Great move by Cal, only option for him to realise his ambition. World champions come from factory teams, not satellite teams.

It may work for him, it may not. However, he will earn a good pay day.

The only way Ducati are going to turn things around is if they redesign the bike. They're currently rolling it in glitter.
