If you're after one don't be put off by poor reviews from the motorcycle media. The reviewers get to ride the very best machinery for free, and as a result don't have anything positive to say about the GS500. I love mine and would take it anywhere.

just bought one

Ive just bought one , 1999 version but as soon as I rode it it felt fantastic , it broke down 5 mins later but that is no fault of the bike , its all down to the dealer i bought it off , I felt so connected with this bike that i paid 400 pound to get it fixed even though i spent a 3minute ride and had to push it home , honestly fantastic bike so much belt for a 500 .. i agreed DO NOT listen to reviews this bike is for long lasting reliable bike love , and the reviewers ride 2012 pure race machines so this to them is nothing but honestly very worth it !

It's true to say that this bike is essentially 20 years old with one major facelift in that time, but look at it this way, it's a proven and reliable machine. It handles well, even when hanging off, the brakes are adequate though lacking 2up and 90mph is easy, although much more than that is a chore, still, you wanna keep your licence, right?

It's not desirable to a thief, it's cheap to insure and I get 68mpg with spirited riding. What's not to like?
