Catalunya MotoGP: Jorge Lorenzo aims to continue golden run

Jorge Lorenzo is confident he can continue his fantastic form in 2010 as he chases a fifth win in seven races during this weekend’s Catalunya MotoGP clash near Barcelona.

Lorenzo has yet to finish outside of the top two this season and he starts his home race with a commanding 47-point lead over Spanish rival Dani Pedrosa.

Many people are already saying the title race is a foregone conclusion given Lorenzo’s red-hot form and the failure of Pedrosa and factory Ducati rider Casey Stoner to maintain a consistent challenge.

But the 23-year-old, who has dropped only ten out of 125-points available in 2010, said:

“I think I am the earliest champion of the history. But for me and for the team the championship is still very long and we have to race in 12 different tracks, so it’s not done at all.

“I accept the possibility to crash and this could happen. When you are a rider and you compete in the world championship you must accept that. Every year I know more the bike and the category and I crash less times.

“I always want to make the maximum and at this moment I don’t think so much about the championship.”

The double world 250GP champion has been denied his chance to avenge last year’s soul-destroying last corner defeat to Valentino Rossi with his Fiat Yamaha team-mate sidelined by injury.

But Lorenzo said: “This race I remember very well from last year, unfortunately the last corner. You know I lost the race and nobody wants not to lose a race. But at least I took a lesson for the future and for me that was very important.”

Lorenzo has made 2010 look like a breeze so far and Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider Ben Spies told MCN at last weekend’s Dutch TT in Assen that the Spaniard was making winning look effortless.

But Lorenzo added: “I don’t if the sofa in my house is more comfortable than the M1. I have to think about it. But speaking sincerely it is not easy what I’m doing and I’m at the limit. From my side the perfect race is to go away at the front. But if it is not possible and I have to fight with the others then I’m prepared to fight.”

The only issue for Lorenzo in Catalunya could be the long start/finish straight which will certainly expose the weakness in Yamaha’s YZR-M1 motor.

Lorenzo, Colin Edwards and Spies have all expressed concerns about a lack of top speed compared to Honda and Ducati this season.

“We know that Yamaha’s engine is not as powerful like the Honda or Ducati but we have other skills, “said Lorenzo. “At this track with the long straight to overtake Honda and Ducati will be difficult but we have a lot of corners to try.”
