Cal Crutchlow to undergo arm injury assessment

Cal Crutchlow flew back to his Isle of Man base last night to undergo checks on the right arm he damaged in the first of three big crashes during his home round at Silverstone last weekend.

The British rider suffered nasty abrasions to his right arm and a severe swelling issue when he lost control of his Monster Yamaha Tech 3 YZR-M1 at over 180mph in Saturday morning’s free practice session.

The 27-year-old had two other fast crashes at Silverstone and he raced to a lonely seventh position in front of a record Silverstone crowd of almost 74,000 fans.

Crutchlow’s right arm, which he has had surgery on for arm pump in the past, ballooned to twice its size after the first of two tumbles in Saturday’s FP3 and he is due to meet medical staff on the Isle of Man today to see whether he requires another operation to ease the swelling.

Crutchlow, who will join Ducati on a two-year deal at the end of this season, told MCN: “I will go and see a surgeon but it is still the same size as yesterday (Sunday) and it needs draining regardless of what is wrong with it.

“It is double the size it should be and there is obviously a reason why there is fluid in it and that’s because I had a big impact on it. Something has obviously gone wrong inside it and so I need to have a look.

“I’ve had the arm operated on before for arm pump but that’s not the reason. I didn’t have any arm pump in the race. I just need to make sure I get it sorted to be ready for Misano. But after the three crashes it will be good to have a few days off.”
