Weston Beach Race faces uncertain future

The UK’s largest beach race could be scrapped indefinitely following last weekend’s multiple crash, according to the Bristol Evening Post.

Altogether 19 riders were taken to hospital after the crash on the main straight, less than a mile into the race.

The most seriously injured rider was 16 year old Ty Killet, who was competing in the elite group for the second year. The South Somerset Moto X Club member is still in a critical condition (Wednesday the 14th).

Now event organiser Gareth Hockey has cast doubts over the race’s long-term prospects.

“I have no intention of running the beach race in Weston again,” he said.

However, North Somerset Council made public their support for the 27-year-old race, which 30,000 fans came to watch.

“We all want to see the Beach Race return,” local councillor Nigel Ashton stated.

The decision has already been made that the event will not be rescheduled this Sunday.

Cllr Ashton said: ‘logistically it is just not possible to re-arrange such a massive event in such a short space of time’.
