Aprilia Motorsport boss, Gigi Dall’Igna has told MCN that both Max Biaggi and Leon Camier will use the new gear driven cam engine this weekend in America. Aprilia are believed to have used the new engine at the opening round of the championship at Phillip Island in qualifying, but not the race. Although there were no official protests, rival manufacturers objected to the new technology which they claimed was not allowed under the current technical regulations.

After weeks of wrangling, it was agreed that Aprilia could introduce the new engine, but not until round seven of the championship this weekend

The new engine configuration is expected to boost power by up to three BHP, but has been primarily introduced to improve cylinder head durability and reliability.

Dall’Igna said: “We will try to use it, not on Saturday, but on Sunday. After that we will make a decision whether we will use it for the race. Both riders will use it, we are not so worried about reliability, it is something new for us so we need to make sure it works.”
